| devilgoat01-02-06, 04:01 AM | If u are a wizard, can you counterspell psionics? If the only spells you can use are dispel magic and greater dispel then you max your check at 1d20 +20 is that correct? What happens at lvl 40. No point counterspelling there? Could u use mordenkainen's disjunction to counterspell psionics or magics? |
| Milo HoBo01-02-06, 05:04 AM | This would be better placed on the psionics board. They can explain anything about magic to psionic interactions. It does slightly depend on the level of transparency used, however. |
| Molot01-02-06, 07:08 AM | You cannot, withone exception. First reason: for normal counterspelling/countermanifesting, you have to use just the same spell or power. But spell with never be the same thing as power. Second, with Improved Counterspelling feat, you have to use spell from the same school as countered effect. However, psionic powers does not have schools at all. If DM uses Psionic to Magic Transparency, however, you may counter psi powers with Dispell Magic or similar spells just as if they were spells from the same level. |
| Seeker9501-02-06, 09:23 AM | You cannot, with one exception. Two exceptions. :D If you use the "psionics is another magic" approach in your game, then you can treat it like any other magic. Including dispelling and counterspelling. However, it would also require assigning "school equivalents" to the psionics. |

However, it would also require assigning "school equivalents" to the psionics.First, so deep transparency is not even an optional rule. Second, this would only work with Improved Counterspelling feat, since the wizard still cannot known powers, and only really few powers have similar enought spells that it can be asummed that it is the same thing. |

| Molot01-02-06, 10:30 AM | Psionic powers don't have schools, and I haven't seen any WotC published optional rule that says they may have. If I've missed something, plz post book and page number. |
| Seeker9501-02-06, 11:43 AM | Molot, re-read my post. I address this. |
| Jaid01-02-06, 12:15 PM | i was under the impression that psionics count as psi-like (or spell-like) abilities, which cannot be counterspelled. in any event, psionic disciplines are already assigned equivalent schools. anything that effects enchantment school also affects telepathy discipline, for example. oh, and to the second question: pretty much, you use epic spells when you are a 40th level caster. no non-epic spell is gonna be worth your time anyways by that point. to the third question: mordenkainen's disjunction cannot be used to counterspell anything except mordenkainen's disjunction. barring the use of feats and such, at any rate. |
| runestar01-02-06, 09:17 PM | You can always use dispel magic to counter powers. :) |
| CaptFrigate01-03-06, 09:27 PM | They can be counterspelled, as per RAW, specifically by dispell magic. Don't take this the wrong way, though. It can be assumed that it can, because Magic-Psionics transparency doesn't say anything about counterspelling. And to do with the schools, the XPH specifically says that for the purposes of Magic-Psionics transparancy, most of the Psionic disciplines are equivalent to schools of magic, except Psychoportation. But, if you are going to counterspell, you will need to tweak it some. You would need to sacrifice a spell slot of equal power as the power, not the level. Meaning that you would not be able to counterspell a 20pp mind thrust with a magic missile. |
