Can you? and if you can, do you use the targeted or the area effect? and what do you target, the rope or the window? and does the dispeling of this throws everybody outside or closes the extradimensional space as in a bag of holding?

Dispel magic must be cast on the window (which is like an invisible sensor of a Scrying spell for dispelling purposes).

Successfully dispelling the Rope Trick, causes the occupants of the extra-dimensional space to be "thrown out" and I presume take falling damage for up to 30', depending on high up the window was.

I dont think you can dispel rope trick. Once inside the door closes and there is nothing there. The door is gone. Only the people inside can "re-open" the door back to the dimention where is was cast thus letting the people out. Now, a smart person could wait and ready for the occupants to come out after the caster time runs out. (1 hour per level)

Sure, you can dispel rope trick. The only problem might be the target of the spell:Target: One touched piece of rope from 5 ft. to 30 ft. longAnd reaching that rope can be tricky, when it can be drawn up into its own extradimensional space.

Just take a gander at dispel magic:Targeted Dispel: One object, creature, or spell is the target of the dispel magic spell.Well, that's handy if the rope is left hangin', but otherwise its a no-go.Area Dispel: When dispel magic is used in this way, the spell affects everything within a 20-foot radius.

For each creature within the area that is the subject of one or more spells...

For each object within the area that is the target of one or more spells...

For each ongoing area or effect spell whose point of origin is within the area of the dispel magic spell...

For each ongoing spell whose area overlaps that of the dispel magic spell, you can make a dispel check to end the effect, but only within the overlapping area.

If an object or creature that is the effect of an ongoing spell...None of those are immediately handy, particularly given thatSpells cannot be cast across the extradimensional interface, nor can area effects cross it.Though you might want to just go ahead and treat dispels cast at the window's location count as cast on the target (the rope) to help tone the spell down a little.

while the extradimensional space inside might not be targeted, as one poster pointed out, the "window" most likely is able to be, and would be the target of a dispel attempt.

Targeted Dispel: One object, creature, or spell is the target of the dispel magic spell.

this applies, because the trick is the spell targeted. the trick can be targeted because it's a spell in effect for a duration, like any other spell.

Area Dispel: When dispel magic is used in this way, the spell affects everything within a 20-foot radius.

see above.

Spells cannot be cast across the extradimensional interface, nor can area effects cross it.

remember, no spell is being cast across the interface... only on the interface itself, as it were. in this case, an 'area dispel' would only affect the trick itself, not the spells/persons inside the extradimensional space. with the spell itself being gone, i imagine the space wouldn't be held together and the contents would be unceremoniously dumped out, along with the applicable damage (which as another person pointed out depends on the distance fallen)

Take this for what it's worth (since I know not everyone agrees with the Sage's rulings), but according to Skip a Dispel Magic just closes the "window".

You don't get dumped out until the Rope Trick ends...

And now for the thought experiment:

Suppose you're in a Rope Trick, and someone put an Anti-Magic Field or a Dimensional Lock in the space that the door would open into.

Could you escape?
