If fly was cast, and you were then paralyzed, can you still fly? It says in the description that it takes as much concentration as walking.

What do you think?

Hmm... that's a tough one. You wouldn't fall, since your maneuverability is good and you can hover. But can you still move about... I would have to go with no, because maneuvering requires actual body movement, you're not just telekinesing yourself around.

The movement you achieve through the fly spell is accomplished by force of will and mental effort. In other words, flapping your arms and shouting "to infinity and beyond!" does not make you fly faster or better than simply thinking "I'll head for that tree" would.

Given that, paralysis would have no effect on your ability to use the spell. Similarly, even if you're paralyzed, you could still concentrate on maintaining an active spell:

A paralyzed character has effective Dexterity and Strength scores of 0 and is helpless, but can take purely mental actions.

the question is ,.. can you concentrate when you are paralyzed?

ans...Yes, thats how you are moving thru the air , you are consciously willing your body to move through the air with the same effort as you consciously direct your feet as you walk.

flying with the fly spell requires no physical movement from your body. :D

So can Janni still fly if they're paralyzed? I mean, obviously anything with wings can't, but what about things that fly just cuz they're badass? I always interpreted fly as more of a "You get a fly speed, now you can zoom around like Peter Pan" rather than a "You can fling yourself about with the power of your mind."

If you are the DM, you can describe how the Janni fly. If they swim through the air, then no, they can't fly while paralyzed. If they move about through power of will, then they can.

IMO, flying is mental for any creature without wings.

Sage has ruled that the spell Fly is mental, and can be done when paralyzed.

Also, when using the spell Fly, the non-thinking position is stable. I.E. If you go to sleep, you stay hanging in air, you do not fall to the ground.

Paralyzed doesn't impact mental concentration or purely mental actions such as casting a stilled, silent spell. I can see how maintaining and directing some spells could be fit into that category.

If you cast fly on someone and that person dies while the spell is active, that person's body will remain hanging in midair until the duration ends. How spooky would that be?

Makes for a great halloween encounter. Wizard casts fly on a henchman, then when the henchman dies, waits for an oppurtune moment to use the still mobile corpse to distract the party in a morose manner. ;)

Right here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/rg/20040720a), from Rules of the Game:

Paralyzed: Paralyzed creatures can take only purely mental actions. In most cases, that prevents the character from using most move, standard, or full-round actions. If the paralyzed creature has some form of movement that doesn't require it to move its body (such as a fly spell), it can use a move action to move, but it cannot take other sorts of move actions, such as drawing weapons.
