11-25-03, 08:04 AM My players want to make an item that can cast Greater Magic Weapon on all their weapons giving a +3 bonus without any limit.

9*3*1800 seems a bit low to me. After all the whole group will always have a +3 weapon for only 48600gp. Also, they could upgrade this item when they'll be more powerful with a +5 version.

Any ideas?

11-25-03, 08:37 AM Yes. Use the pecking order of magical item creation. You NEED to do this. It is NOT a 3rd level spell, but a +3 to a to a weapon which is something completely different.

A +3 bonus to weapons is 18,000, at least. Compare this to a keen scabard at 16,000 3 times a day. That's 8 times the base price of 2000.

So, 8 times 18,000 is 144,000. For unlimited times per day, I would, say, double it, to 288,000.

That makes it roughly affordable at 20th level, which seems about right to me.

Mind you, this IS going by the books. At least the best I can do. The doubling aspect at the end is just my guesswork. If they choose for it to NOT be unlimited, keep it at 3 times a day.

11-25-03, 08:46 AM what level are the characters? 48KGP is a lot. if they pool their money (and i'm certain they will) this is attainable. how many people in the party? if 3 or 4 then its not that much difference than having a +3 weapon anyway. this way has more limitations too...minor globe will take it down, it can be dispelled permanently (until recast of course). seems reasonable to me. if you are leading toward large scale war then that is a problem. i can see the item owner taking a few minutes before the battle to cast the spell on most or all of his sides weapons. their are solutions to this. you could have your local god of war or balance deem this unacceptable unless the battle is cataclysmic and will result in their doom, or you could translate one round of mass war into 10 minutes of time or something you think is appropriate thus reducing the spells effectiveness but allowing some advatage. those are a couple options, im sure you or someone on these boards can think of more.

11-25-03, 09:06 AM just read other poster. that keen scabbard item is crazy anyway. a keen weapon is little more than 8000GP, and thats permanent. i know the scabbard affects any weapon sheathed in it that keen can be cast upon but not many people have more than 2 or 3 weapons anyway, and that is why that item demands a heftier price.

i see your point though i think over a quarter million GP is a bit much. i can see the abbuses this item might lead to as well but if curtailed its not unreasonable.

P.S.
another option i just thought of if used in mass war is to elevate the item to artifact status (it would be idolized after such an event). a god might seek the item then, and it might imbue the possesor with a curse as artifacts often do, it might gain sentience and seek to control its possesor and drive him unavoidably toward war, the item itself might get corrupted in this manner and change to evil and only allow evil creatures to wield it. there are more but i'm sure you get the picture.

The best you could do is a wand, if your objective is to allow the spell to affect weapons other than the ones the possessor is wielding. The item you are describing is a spell completion item, and these consistently have charges, or are personal.

If you want an item that affects all the weapons the owner is wielding (up to two at a time?) go with the formula of:
1 (spell level) x 9 (caster level for +3) x 2000 (for use-activated)) x 2 (for two weapons at a time) = 36,000 gp.

11-25-03, 09:50 AM Greater Magic Weapon is a 3rd level spell, not a 1st level and a caster level of 12 in order to get a +3. That's at least 144,000 gps by your formula, making it a 17th level item.

Odd how it comes out to what I had.

They could have that money by the end of the dungeon... I think that I'll stick with the wand or the 144,000 version..
