Question: Can you Plane Shift into the Ethereal Plane? I don't think there's anything specifically stating that you cannot. You'd end up a long distance away from where you wanted to be, but once you made it back to your original location, I could see lots of benefits to this, assuming you had lots of force effect spells.

it's plane, you cna shift to any plane, so yes.

the only time you wouldn't be able to shift to a plane is if it had specfic restrictions against shifting into it.

Since the ethereal is overlapping the prime, I would rule that if you shift to that plane, you are pretty much going to end up right where you are, relatively speaking.

*that is, i don't see what all the benefits are... i agree that you can plane shift to the ethereal. just not sure why having lots of force effects would make it so appealing.

The Ethereal is a plane, so yes, you can Plane Shift to it. As you note, you'd be hundreds of miles away from location coterminous to your location on the Prime, but you can get back there.

Note that you can't Teleport to the same site on the Ethereal, since you've never actually been to it; you've just been to the location on the Prime. You'll have to travel through the intervening space.

There aren't any benefits with force spells. Force effects cast on the Prime transfer to the Ethereal, but it's not true in reverse. If you cast Wall of Force on the Ethereal, no one on the Prime will care or even know.

You can still do interesting things with this move, though. For instance, if you can establish reliable communication between the planes (such as through sign language and See Invisibility), you can plant spies on the Ethereal who follow anyone you wish and report on them to you.

If you drop a Wall of Force on the Ethereal, it works against Force effects from the Material.

For example, a PC with Mage Armor spell on is walking on the Material plane when bam! he's stopped in his tracks because the Mage Armor hits a Wall of Force on the Ethereal Plane. Of course any solid ethereal wall would stop said PC.

Indeed, but then why bother going to the Ethereal at all? Sure, it allows for some funny stuff*, but nothing so advantageous that it's worth relocating to the plane via a convoluted Plane Shift scheme.

* For instance, you could put your golem on the Ethereal and have it follow you around. When some annoying adventurers come after, cast Mage Armor on one of them so that the golem can grab him from the Ethereal and haul him around.

Some good reasons would be for building a castle/keep there, to find an Ethereal adventure site, seaching the insides of mountains or underground for caves, dungeons, etc. (in the Material Plane), an alternate way to travel to the moon and, of course, for spying.

Ghosts could Plane Shift off the Ethereal, losing their Manifest (and Incorporeal subtype) to adventure in other planes. Afterwards they'dwant to return to the Ethereal.
