No. Even though you were dead, the items were still in your possession, not his. The only way he could take your items without taking you along would be to pry them out of your hands or strip them off your body.

So, I'm guessing your DM didn't want you guys to keep the gear from the fallen comrade.

Not quite true. Once your character was dead, said character is no longer a creature, but an object, and an object can't be said to be in possession of anything.

The only way he could take your items without taking you along would be to pry them out of your hands or strip them off your body.

Actually, he'd merely have to touch the specific objects in question, since it would be no different than teleporting away with an object kept in a cage without teleporting the cage.

Nevertheless, if your DM did do as described, he may be rewriting the spell, because it requires you to touch what you're teleporting with you -- not touch an object that is connected to the object(s) you want to teleport. I suppose you should be grateful that the teleporter didn't try to teleport away with your corpse, but that's one of the funny things about the spell.

If your character is human, odds are good that the weight of the corpse (not to mention gear) is well in excess of the wizard's maximum load, and thus could not be teleported. Said wizard could teleport away with your armor (or backpack and contents) just by touching them, however, without needing to stop to remove them.

On the other hand, if your character was only unconscious, the wizard could have teleported you and your gear away together, because you are considered a willing target of this spell if unconscious. Perhaps it's best that your character was dead then?

In fact, it may be that the wizard could legally teleport away all of your gear, provided that:

1. The wizard touched a piece of it which was in contact with all of the rest of it, so long as he was also touching a piece that he'd be teleporting, and;
2. The weight of all that gear (plus the wizard's own gear) was not in excess of the wizard's maximum load.

It would be no different than teleporting away with a tablecloth and all of the dishes on it, while leaving the table in place.

Cheap, but legal. I'm not sure I care much for the connotations, but remember that what's good for NPC spellcasters is good for those in your party.

Exactly what were the circumstances of this situation? In other words, why did the bad guy want your items so badly? It sounds like your DM was just being an indian-giver, unless your character had some unique magical item that was pivotal to the bad guy's schemes...
