hi , my DM says that a candle of invocation is way too powerful for its price. specificaly at high levels.
for example a 15th level cleric would gain a ninth level spell, and could continue doing so for a fews days, u only need to burn it for an hour per day while u pray so it pretty much lasts for 3 days. plus u get a GATE spell even if u have only a few minutes of burning time left. all this for 8,500 gp.
it would cost this much for a scroll of true ressurection! and here u get 3 potential true ressurections or even a miracle!(thats one cheap miracle).not to mention the bonuses it provides for members of the same alignment. i do see his point.
can anyone give me anything to punch back with? i do enjoy the +2 caster level and the 9th level spell...

thanks

i'm pretty sure it says somewhere that once the candle is burnt it is exhausted of magic when the candle goes out. i.e. 1 use only.

and in your example, the cleric could only cast the 9th lvl spell during the 4 hrs that the candle burned.

though the candle is still RIDICULOUSLY powerful.

By the time you are playing at 15th level, a single 9th level spell a day for three days is not that outrageous. Of course, how often do you have your "i gotta cast the 9th level spell" encounters in the first hour after preparing your spell? (The candle must be kept burning to prepare spells you would not normally qualify for.) And who wants to go wandering through the dungeon with this candle lit just in case?

The gate is a one shot effect. It uses the entire candle.

It is not an abusive item. It is useful. For the most part, I use them (when I can find them) for the gate.

You know, I've given out this item several times, yet I have NEVER seen it actually used by my group.

Not because it’s a weak item or anything, but because they are so loath to use them except for that “special occasion” or for the fight with the BBEG (though they almost never know when that’s going to happen with a full days notice).

Just an observation of the odd behavior of my players.
