Create Material Components
Conjuration
Level 0 Sor/Wiz
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 2 hours +1minute per 10gp/5 components
Range: Personal
Duration: Instantaneous
Effect: See text
Saving Throw: None
Spell resistance: No

This spell creates Spell Components of up to 50gp/level, Or 5/level of no gp cost material components They are useful only for spell casting, and if they are purposefully sold by the caster the caster incurs a penalty of 5exp/1gp.

- Is it to powerful for a cantrip? Not useful in travelling areas, it was made for my group who likes playing below normal party wealth to make it a challenge but the qizard is new and didn't know he needed spell components or that they'd cost gold (sorcerers are not in this campaign setting the players don't think they mix well)

yes it is too powerful IMO, a oth level spell should never create anything valuable, even if it is only of use to the caster.

If it only made material components with no value (bat guano, etc) it would be balanced.

It scales. Cantrips don't get better.

Anything in a large enough quantity will have value. :P I could create enough pieces of meat and then open my own food shop... :D

Just have the wizard take the eschew materials feat. :)

The material cost is there to prevent mass use of a spell
If I have a spell like that, I will SURELY pass every not adventuring day casting it tons of times so that I wouldn't have to spend my money for components.
The spell simply take away a balancing rule... really dangerous

You could also adapt the 2ed spell from Tome of Magic:
Conjure Spell Component(Conjuration/Summoning)
Range: 1 mile/level
Components: V,S
Duration: 1 Round
Casting Time: 1
Area of Effect: 3 components/level
Saving Throw: None

When this spell is cast, the Wizard teleports desired items directly to his hand. The objects must be naturally occurring components for spells the wizard knows and they must be within spell range. The components must be items commonly found in the area, such as a twig,
feather, firefly, or bit of beeswax in a forest.
If the components lie underground or underwater at a depth greater than 10 feet, they cannot be conjured, even if the caster is at a similar depth (such as in a cavern or at the bottom of a lake). The spell will not cause the appearance of components whose value exceeds 1 gp. Thus, it is impossible to summon gemstones, crystals, metals, pearls, etc. Adiditionaly, components cannot be manmade or altered from their natural state (coins, jewelry, cut or crushed gems, mirrors, etc.), nor can they be taken from someone else's possesion.
A single conjure spell components spell will summon three components per level of the caster. They may three different components or multiples of a single component.
Attempting to conjure an animal's body parts (such as bat fur) produce unpredictable results. The DM should roll on the table below.

D4 Roll - Result
1 - Desired component appears.
2 - Components does not appear.
3 - Creature is teleported to the caster.
4 - Caster is teleported to the creature.

Only animals with Intelligence scores of 1-4 can be affected by this spell. Humanoids and fantastic animals (dragons, bugbears, unicorns, etc.) cannot be affected.
In all cases, the DM must use common sense to determine the likelihood of the component being located within spell range.

PS.
Typing written texts from books takes longer than I thought, it took me ~2 minutes to type that. Good thing I wrote that from memory, as I've used that one a lot; If I had to copy it, it would have taken longer.

Cheers,
Cantrip :)

@ The OP: The ability to create costly material components at no cost to oneself is overpowered regardless. That you made it a cantrip only makes it moreso. Costly material components exist for a reason.

@ CantripN: That spell is a lot mor balanced. It wouldn't be too hard to adapt to 3.5, either, I think.

Though, Kyle, I have to wonder why your Wizard is having problems with components. Didn't he buy a component pouch? If so, he's assumed to have any non-costly components he may need as long as he has the pouch. As for costly components... Yeah, you're supposed to buy those.

Another overpowered cantrip (SRD):

Touch of Fatigue:

Necromancy
Level: Sor/Wiz 0
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Touch
Target: Creature touched
Duration: 1 round/level
Saving Throw: Fortitude negates
Spell Resistance: Yes

You channel negative energy through your touch, fatiguing the target. You must succeed on a touch attack to strike a target.

The subject is immediately fatigued for the spell’s duration.

This spell has no effect on a creature that is already fatigued. Unlike with normal fatigue, the effect ends as soon as the spell’s duration expires.

Material Component: A drop of sweat.

No cantrip should do 4 points of ability damage (fatigued = -2str and -2dex). But the best part about it is how conveniant it is for duskblades to use when they arent channeling a higher level spell into their weapon.

Its an extremely low gold campaign, they play at 1/4 the recommended in the DMG in this one. Now i see the problem, it was harder to see 12 hours ago.
Thanks for the input

Touch of fatigue doesn't do ability damage at all, it just applies the fatigued status (which gives a -2 penalty to those two scores), and it only lasts 1 round per level. Since it has a save negates and is a 0th level spell I can't see that it would be that effective for a duskblade to channel, especialy since effects from the same source do not stack... (I could see it being more useful if a second touch of fatigue would actually exhaust the target, then it might be useful burning through them hoping for a failed save).

back on topic, I think if you try to rework the cantrip it should be closer in nature the the 2e spell that CantripN listed above.

Not true in the DnD world, sorry, you lose.
You'd make more money from offering your prestidigitation abilities out than making bat guano.

Or Druids. Most items don't work when Wildshaped anyway. Apparently they didn't, though; there's a Wizard in the party.

If you want to make a fortune with a cantrip, Prestidigitation is all you need.
Use the Flavor Food ability of the spell to make boot leather taste like grade A steak. Combine that with even rudimentary cooking skills, and you can make a fortune as a chef.

Or use the cleaning function of Prest and open up a drycleaners.

Anyway, yeah. A cantrip that generates enough non-valuable spell components for one casting would be balanced. Never anything valuable, and never enough to just stock you up all day long.

Yeah, just get a cheap wand of infinite prestidigitations or something, that's genious :D

Maybe you should put a duration on the components so the wizard has to use them within a certain amount of time (one minute/level?), or else they crumble to dust.

Oh, and a chef that uses prestidigitation on his cooking would probably get run out of town. IMO, it would be the D&D equivalent of adding MSG to the food. ;)

But if you don't get caught...

It's like using mount to make money. You just have to not be around by the time someone figures out that you cheated them. It's also not a bad idea to have been disguised at the time of the transaction... Just in case they come looking.

In regards to having a cantrip that creates a material component, Would be beyond the scope of a 0 level spell considering that a 4th level Minor Creation doesn't allow it.

If a Mid-level spell doesn't allow, how would the meager power of a cantrip allow?

"Attempting to use any created object as a material component causes the spell to fail."
Kyle_the_wizard

07-21-06, 12:05 AM
Yeah I haven't read most of the creation spells...Maybe I'll trim it down to a 1 time use, next spell cast within 10min doesn't require a material component.

And yeah the party is rather weird, A wizard, fighter, Paladin,Rogue,Dragon shaman and ranger

Losing XP for selling the components isn't a problem: Just make a Box of Create Material Components'.

Box of Create Material Components'
This item, also known as Pandora's box, allows you to create material components by speaking the command word. The material components appear in the box. The person who gave the command word counts as the owner of the material components (duh).
Prerequisites: Create wonderous item, Create Material Components, charm DM. Market Price: 3,600 gp (1/2 * 1,800 * 4 (because of strong brokenation etc... :P).

Just make the 'buyer' use the box once or twice. Noone loses xp, and you get money! :)

But why would anyone ever buy material components with a box like this?

CantripN, your spell allows for mages to escape prisons by casting a level two spell often enough. You know, like, summon rabbit, summon rabbit summon rabbit !oops! caster is teleported to a rabbit.

First, it's a first level spell.
Second, how do you know there is a rabbit in range?
Third, who's to say you won't encounter a Vorpal Bunny or a Dire Rabbit?
Also, aren't rabbit burrows 10 feet below the ground?

You do have a point, though. Thing is, if your captor is stupid enough to not bind and gag a spellcaster (at least), then he deserves to have his captives escape.
Thiez

Alright, then try summoning a mundane rabbit-ear.

I'm sure there are bunnies within 1 mile, and at least one of them will be above the ground.

A level 1 wizard could use this, that's the problem. I don't think anyone would expect a first or second level wizard to teleport out of a prison.

Well, it IS a 2ed spell. Nahal's Reckless Dweomer is a 1st level spell in 2ed. It could gate in a Balor or incinerate the whole prison. It could also turn the caster to a pink duck.
