| The Vorpal Tribble03-22-06, 10:44 PM | Prestidigitation, the most useful spell in the world... isn't it wonderful? In fact, it helps proof you against vampires. Cast it, and poof, you reek of garlic for an hour. Vampire will flee from you at top speed. Now, another use I'm not so sure of is can a cantrip make a substance transparent? It says you can change the color of an object, so could you turn a wooden wall into a big window? If so, what happens if its sunny out and the vampire is in the same room with you? |
| Vanigo03-22-06, 11:10 PM | Prestidigitation, the most useful spell in the world... isn't it wonderful? In fact, it helps proof you against vampires. Cast it, and poof, you reek of garlic for an hour. Vampire will flee from you at top speed. In addition to the cut of your gib, I likes me the sound of your town. Murfreesboro. They won't flee, though, they just can't enter the area. And I can see a DM ruling that only real garlic works. I wouldn't let prestidigitation make something transparent, though. Well, maybe if it was already translucent and very thin, i.e. a piece of paper or something. I am rather fond of using a gate for that purpose, though. Sure, it's a ninth level spell, but I just can't say no to a kill with no save, no SR It doesn't even have to be day; just make a quick Knowledge: The Planes check to figure out somewhere where it is. Of course, if it's day and you can get it in the right spot, passwall will do just as well. |
| The Vorpal Tribble03-23-06, 12:12 AM | Well, all it says is that they detest the odor of garlic. Prestidigitation shouldn't have a problem conjuring up genuine garlic particles. Another thought is prestidigitation could also make a really cruddy, fragile, but perfectly usable holy symbol. Fear the power of the cantrip... |
| Moon-Lancer03-23-06, 12:38 AM | i think it could stop him from wanting to bite you, but not pokeing your eyes out with his thumbs. |
| irzg9zh3psgq3m0903-23-06, 12:56 AM | Hahaha, very clever. I don't think prestidigitation could make something transparent. It could change color, but changing the color of an object vs. changing its molecular integrity to allow light to pass through are two different things. Also, I think holy symbols need to be blessed by a cleric or some sort of priest in order to be holy, so creating a crude holy symbol by using prestidigitation won't be effective. I don't know much about other religions, but I know that in Christianity, a holy figure (such as small statues of Mary, the Cross, a rosary, etc.) is only holy if a priest blesses them. Otherwise, they're worthless. This may or may not carry on to D&D, but it seems reasonable to do so, or else anyone can carve a holy figure from wood and nobody would buy them anymore. i think it could stop him from wanting to bite you, but not pokeing your eyes out with his thumbs. This is what the MM says about vampires: Vampires cannot tolerate the strong odor of garlic and will not enter an area laced with it. Similarly, they recoil from a mirror or a strongly presented holy symbol. These things don’t harm the vampire—they merely keep it at bay. So I think a strong smell of garlic would keep a vampire away from you. Of course, if the vampire has any ranged attacks and/or spells, he'll probably use those. It will only keep a vampire from being near you. However, using what the MM says, a vampire recoils from mirrors as well. You could use prestidigitation to create a crude mirror rather than a holy symbol, and it would keep a vampire at least 5 feet away from you. Still, you're not immune it any ranged attacks it would have. |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.03-23-06, 09:13 AM | Prestidigitation is too crude to create the workmanship of a true Holy Symbol. It would be like taking a circle of yellow felt and saying it was the holy symbol of pelor. Likewise, I don't think they could have a surface perfect and reflective enough to be a mirror. |
| KublaiKhan03-23-06, 10:33 AM | My players and I frequently try to figure out the best ways to kill $random_monster with just a cantrip. Suffice it to say...it gets interesting. And my thought for a 'ranged ignition to light lamps' cantrip is *very* much not going to happen now. |
| tarkin03-23-06, 11:48 AM | Holy symbols do not need to be special and they can simply be painted on. Also, it should not that hard to make. Many vampire movie I have seen had people take two sticks and form a cross. I would definitely let you use prestidigitation to make a small holy symbol. ------ The garlic smell would NOT work like real garlic, but you could bluff the vampire with it. ------ Transparent is code for invisible. Prestidigitation can not make something invisible. It can change color, and that should only be on the outer edge, not remove it entirely. |
| irzg9zh3psgq3m0903-23-06, 08:17 PM | Also, it should not that hard to make. Many vampire movie I have seen had people take two sticks and form a cross. But then again, many other vampire movies/novels where people do this are ineffective. It all depends on the writer's interpretation of what vampire's are and how they function. |
| ydirbut03-23-06, 08:45 PM | Prestdigitation is Overpowered, same as Magic Missile. |
| runestar03-23-06, 09:20 PM | I wouldn't be suprised of that was the next spell to be errata'ed by wotc... |
| Osedox03-23-06, 09:21 PM | Prestdigitation isnt overpowered, people just try to make it do things it isnt ment to do, i personaly would rule that prestdigitation isnt viable for any of the above uses, for instance in the spell discription it says under saving throw: see text, and while there are no examples of where a save would be viable in the text I would allow a vampire a will save to overcome any paltry garlic smell. For that matter it mentions flavoring but nowhere does it say anything about changing the scent of an object. Secondly it says that objects created are unsuitable for tools, weapons, or spell components that is enough to clearly rule out the creation of any mirrors and holy/unholy symbols (lets not be biased here evil clerics need love too). Use spells the correct way, not the way you wish they were. |
| lokilowkey03-24-06, 03:45 AM | Prestdigitation... I love cantrips, but isn't it also stated somewhere that a cantrip is by definition a nondamaging spell? At least , not directly. Holy symbol... fine altering molecules with intent to kill a vampire.... you just wasted a spell altering molecules with intent to do something harmless/fun... fine Cantrips/prestidigation are there for flavor only as far as I am concerned. Classic example is of Gandalf lighting his pipe with his 'fingerflame' ... fine. Using the exact same fingerflame to actually do something nasty ... you just wasted a spell. My interpretation, no more. |
| The Vorpal Tribble03-24-06, 05:03 PM | I love cantrips, but isn't it also stated somewhere that a cantrip is by definition a nondamaging spell? I think Acid Splash, Frost Ray, Inflict Minor Wound, and the like would disagree with you ;) |
| KublaiKhan03-24-06, 05:23 PM | Heheheheh. First time I've seen prestedigitation called "overpowered".... Seems to me that the second someone comes up with a clever way to do things with a spell, someone starts screaming for it to be nerfed. It's *magic*. It's being cast by really smart people [ or really cool people. Or both ]. Eventually someone's going to find a fun, novel way to use it. That's like saying you should take out the 10' pole, 'cuz you can use it to defeat a lot of traps. |
| Doopliss03-24-06, 05:26 PM | Double-post. Please ignore. |
| Doopliss03-24-06, 05:31 PM | I suppose the garlic would work, but it doesn't stop him from standing back until you fail a Dominating Gaze save. Because it's mind control, he could quite accidentally realize it's a spell and make you remove the smell. Not that there aren't worse things to do with a dominated PC. ;) Usually, it's not a good idea to make the option of dominating a PC seem more convenient than it would be otherwise, so it's usually better to only use such traditional methods for a couple rounds before changing your strategy. On a similar note, what happens if you trap a vampire in a corner using a Holy Symbol/Mirror? You could put it right up to his face, and he'd have nowhere to recoil. Does he just stand there, Screeching in agony until it's removed? It could be a mean way to imprison a Vampire, trapping him in a coffin with a Holy Symbol on the bottom of the lid. ;) |
| irzg9zh3psgq3m0903-24-06, 08:31 PM | Osedox Well, I think the list of things described in the prestidigitation spell are just examples, since the first sentance of the spell says are "minor tricks that novice spellcasters use for practice." If one can change the color of an object with this spell, why not the smell? But you're definitely right, the vampire would get a saving throw against it. lokilowkey Vampires don't get harmed by the smell garlic or the sight of a holy symbol. They are only repelled, which means they just stay away. Plus, as The Vorpal Tribble said, there are some damaging cantrips. Doopliss That is a great question. Haha, put a vampire in a straightjacket embedded with holy symbols, locked inside a mirrored cage... heh heh heh. It'll probably drive the guy insane. |
| ShadowWarrior03-24-06, 09:34 PM | Assuming he wasn't already, what with being an evil blood sucking monster that steals the lifeforce of people to survive and all. |
| Doopliss03-24-06, 10:46 PM | Nah, Vampirism actually boosts your wisdom score, and well as int and cha. It really messes with a character's mindset, but you come out more mentally acute than you were in life. Even if that can still qualify as insane, I think he's talking gibbering, dazed, and confused insane. Do you think immunity to mind-affecting abilities would be a problem? :plotting: |
| Kyuketsukiouji03-24-06, 11:10 PM | Assuming he wasn't already, what with being an evil blood sucking monster that steals the lifeforce of people to survive and all. Vampires, as undead, do not need do eat or drink food, or anything else, for that matter, unless they have levels in the Lifedrinker class. |
| The Vorpal Tribble03-24-06, 11:14 PM | Haha, put a vampire in a straightjacket embedded with holy symbols, locked inside a mirrored cage... heh heh heh. It'll probably drive the guy insane. *grins* Reminds me of a story a DM once told me. His players had somehow subdued an incredibly powerful creature and put it into some sort of primitive straight jacket. It awoke, looked down, and laughed. It rose into the air and objects started to fling themselves at the players. One player, a psion, said he was going to manifest aversion on the creature, an ability that makes them stay away or not act out whatever the psion chooses. The DM rolls a 1 and sighs. 'What is he afraid of now?' he asked. 'His straight jacket.' the player responded ;) Nah, Vampirism actually boosts your wisdom score, and well as int and cha. It really messes with a character's mindset, but you come out more mentally acute than you were in life. Ugh, that seriously annoys me. I'm assuming they take it from Bram Stoker's Dracula where he is basically a genius. However, they make mention many times in the book that in life this guy was about the smartest, canniest, mosti maginative guy around, and that he had taken his brilliance with him to the grave. THATS why he was so difficult, because he was a genius beforehand and had had centuries to hone his intellect. Nothing to do with the process of becoming a vampire :pbbbtt: None of the other vampires in the book were possessed of any particular smarts. |
| jaelis03-24-06, 11:30 PM | Surely the garlic trick is a legit use of the spell. All it amounts to is wasting a spell when you could just pull out some garlic and rub it on yourself. But what is the effect? Vampires cannot tolerate the strong odor of garlic and will not enter an area laced with it. So rubbing garlic on yourself probably wouldn't do much, since you're not an area. I'd just have the vampire be reluctant to make melee attacks against you, but he wouldn't be prevented from it if there were a good reason. I don't think I'd let you use prestidigitation to "lace" an area with the odor, even just a 5 foot square. That seems beyond the scope of the spell. None of the other vampires in the book were possessed of any particular smarts. They were all vampire spawn? |
| irzg9zh3psgq3m0903-25-06, 12:05 AM | Hmm... just thought... what if you make the vampire smell like garlic? :D |
| Doopliss03-25-06, 10:26 AM | Vampires, as undead, do not need do eat or drink food, or anything else, for that matter, unless they have levels in the Lifedrinker class.Actually, they're 'diet dependent'. If they go for, say, three or five days without blood they're pretty crazed until they can get some. Make it a week (Probably more) and they sort of de-animate until someone trickles some blood down their throat. (They can remain de-animated indefinitely, assuming they're not outside. ;) ) Not sure about the exact amount of days, but I remember it from Libris Mortis. They were all vampire spawn?Hey, ECL 5 humans are rare in monster literature. ;) Hmm... just thought... what if you make the vampire smell like garlic? :DOkay, we run a pretty undead-heavy campaign. Next level, I'm definitely learning Prestidigation. :mage: |
| True Cavalier03-25-06, 01:24 PM | Getting access to holy symbols isn't that hard, every cleric has one, and many pious non-clerics would probably be carrying one. I don't see why that spell is overpowered for being able to conjure an item that your party probably has already :) Of course how much a holy symbol *really* protects from a vampire, that's debateable. A vampire spellcaster could still blow you up from a distance, a vampire warrior could throw stuff at you, either of them could kill all your party members, and while you hold your holy symbol to stop the vampire in front of you another could sneak from behind and grab your neck... And a DM that likes the undead (ie, me) can just rule that powerful vampires aren't even affected by holy symbols. |
