According to the SRD/PHB/Whatever, A starting Wizards spellbook contains all 0 level spells (excluding prohibited schools).

... But what if you have more than the Player's Handbook to pull spells from?

I'm assuming I can't say "I have every cantrip in the 3.5 system", since my D&D group totals to having just about every suppliment.

Do I have the amount in the PHB, which I can subtract from for other cantrips?

EDIT: Nevermind. I got it.

All cantrips means all cantrips. Unspecialized Wizards know all cantrips just like Clerics know all spells from all sources of all levels they can cast.

I think one of the best ways to do it would be to say that your wizard begins play with any 19 0-level spells. This would allow you quite a few options for 0-level spells and stick within the spirit of how many spells you should start with.

I was told by a friend (I only posted here since I couldn't reach him) that the three core books never reference to anything outside of themselves, so it would not reference to cantrips from other books.

Personally, I think it makes sense. Otherwise, Wizards would have spellbooks of nothing but cantrips.

If I were to DM a campaign for it, though... I would give them a number of cantrips equal to the number in the PHB that they can select from any core or suppliment book.

Guess that's one answer. And if you go by the RAW, it's 100% offical. I just see a tiny problem. The spellbook. A spellbook has a set number of pages, and number of spells per page. That's one cantrip per page, or 19 from the PH. If you toss in every other D20 book, your talking at least a 100 pages. It's kinda odd to have a book of endless pages, evey time a new book comes out 'pop' there is a new page in the spell book that you never flipped to before. Clerics can get away with it because it's what their deity gives them, or what they ask for, ect.
You might be able to get away with a cantrip spell book, that's a full 100 of them. There should be enough spells to fill it, but that's at least two spellbooks a wizard would have to carry around. You'd still have to explain the new cantrips though.

So, my alternative answer, a wizard character starts with 20 cantrips(roughy what they get in the PH) of the players choice, from whatever source is allowed in the game.
A second alternative would be to just say the PH cantrips are the 'basic set' that everyone gets. You can only start with them, but your free to add to them later.

thats what we do.

20 cantrips and you can pick up other as normal later.

these represent the 20 starter spells you learned as an aprentice
