It says in the Players Handbook that lvl 0 spells take up one page. But it also says that a Spellbook has all lvl 0 spells already written in it.

WTF man!? That's 19 pages already gone in a 100 page book, unless you're a specialist... then it's a few less pages gone. Not to mention all the lvl 0 spells that are in books other than the Players Handbook.

I think that's a total a drawback. Every time I get a new D&D book I either have to ignore the new spells in it or take more pages out of my spellbook?

Somebody help me out here. I really don't think that's a fair system.

You don't have to scribe all of them. My Abjurer only had 8. You can pick and choose. But they do come in handy sometimes.

A spellbook is only 50 gp. What? You can't afford a new one? I would take more spells known over more empty spellbook pages anyday. :)

I had been under the impression one could only have 1 spellbook, that wizards got most of their magic from scrolls or whatever.

I actually haven't even started using this character yet, I just rolled it up last night... just in case I wanted to be a Wizard at some point. It's an Evoker, ignoring Necromancy and Abjuration.
I'm also wondering: Can a specialist write down spells from schools other than their specialty in their spell book? I couldn't find anything in the Players Handbook that said whether I could or couldn't.

Nope. As a specialist for school Z, you consider all X and Y spells to be Forbidden Fruit.

I know that.
I'm asking about writing W to A spells in my book.

The simple fix:
When using spells from various soursebooks, try this variant rule:
At first level, a wizard gets to choose 1 0 level spell per point of int (meaning even the worst wizards will get 12 or 13, which will cover more than all the useful ones). If he is a specialist wizard he gets all of the cantrips of his school for free. Wizards without a specialist school get arcane mark and prestidigitation for free. This both limits the 0 level spells and allows the caster to study cantrips from books other than the PhB. (This does however mean that many wizards will get all of the zero level spells in the PhB anyway)

The other simple fix: If first level spells take one page, shouldnt 0 level spells take up half a page? They count as half a spell level when crafting magic items.

The really loose fix: The cantrips can all be written in draconic shorthand, thus all can be written on one page. It does say that 0 level spells take up one page, right? Whos to say that they can't all take up the same page...

In my game:

The spellcaster starts with all permitted cantrips found in the PHB. These are scribed into the caster's starter spellbook. This leaves at least 81 blank pages, and more for a specialist. If the caster finds new cantrips (if I allow non-PHB sources through the course of the campaign) or creates new spells through research, these must be added.

A caster can (and should) have more than one spellbook. Most casters in my games keep a master spellbook(s) in safe storage that contain all of the spells they have ever used or scribed. Then they will have a travel book that they are most likely to have with them on any given journey, complete with protections for various environmental dangers.

... plenty of NPCs who know far more spells than a single 100-page spellbook can hold. They have no extra feats to allow this, so presumably there is no limit to the number of spellbooks you can have, either with you or stored away.

Also, why stick with the default 100-page variant? Either use a bigger book, or some more strange solution (infinitely long parchment scroll, whatever).

If wizards are stuck with just 100 levels of spells, they would be only a weaker form of a sorcerer, and far inferior to clerics.

Any wizard who's worth the price of a bit of bat guano has more than one spell book, thats the idea behind Grimores (the book you keep at home for when bad things happen to your travel spell books) and of course Arcanabables (thats not spelled right...which is the assortment of books you have ready for travel) some have a spell book for each spell level, others have one or two for each school, etc. If you absolutly hate spellbooks remake your character as a sorcerer or talk to your DM about using the spellpoint system found on page 153 of the unearthed arcana

That would be grimoire and arcanabula.

Oh.

Yes, you can. The only spells you can't take are those in X and Y. Everything else is fair game, and you get one bonus z spell per day.

As said above, you can just have a bigger spellbook or you can just go to a bookmaker to add pages to your spellbook, it would just be like 1g per spell or something.

OR!
You can make a magical spellbook that contains 100 pages but by placing a piece of paper to the book it adds a blank page, but it still looks small and weighs as much as a normal spellbook.
