Any other drawbacks? (and yes, I know that quickened spells, or spells which can otherwise be cast as a free action, do not provoke attacks of opportunity) |
| The Simbul10-24-06, 02:30 PM | You could normally take a 5ft step and then proceed to cast a spell, however most Mage Slayer builds involve the use of reach weapons (i.e. spiked chain) so this tactic isnt very useful. The key to a mage overcoming a Mage Slayer is having defensive or mobility spells in place BEFORE the enemy is adjacent to you, which should not be that hard given some of the durations of them. Likewise, in addition to quickened/swift/immediate actions not provoking an AoO, you also have free reign to use spell trigger, command word, use activated (non-potion), or continuous magic items, as well as supernatural or extraordinary abilities (arcane fire, wildshape, etc). IMO the most recent and better tactics against Mage Slayer is Complete Mage's dimension jumper (Sor/Wiz5, swift action casting time, teleport 30ft as a move action, duration 1/round), which is basically the new and improved version of Lutzaen's frequent jaunt. In addition, unlike Lutzaen's frequent jaunt, the dimension jumper spell does NOT reference or chain off of dimension door, which means you are free to take actions before OR after teleporting. So you can use the spell to get away from an enemy and then cast standard action spell to either kill them, restrain them, or to put more distance between the two of you. |

It does you absolutely no good if you are casting a spell, which is what the OP's question was about. |
| Caylin10-27-06, 07:54 AM | But couldnīt you use tumble to get out of threat range before casting? |
| Loki565410-27-06, 08:10 AM | But couldnīt you use tumble to get out of threat range before casting? Yes, but... Any other drawbacks? ...the OP is asking about casting while threatened. My suggestion: bump your Concentration modifier as much as possible. |
| GalaGalaxia11-03-06, 03:47 AM | Yes, but... ...the OP is asking about casting while threatened. My suggestion: bump your Concentration modifier as much as possible. ... which would do no good, in this case, as defensive casting is impossible due to the feat. |

| GalaGalaxia11-03-06, 10:37 AM | Aha! Yes, that makes sense. :) |
| WinDReiN11-03-06, 12:00 PM | Greater Dimension Door allows you to move a great distance with out provoking AoO. |
| GalaGalaxia11-03-06, 03:36 PM | ... but it is also using up spells :) |
