| Eilistraeeeee11-06-05, 08:58 AM | i'm playing a cleric until lvl 8 and after that i'm going to become an apostle of peace. AoP has it's own caster progression and i was wondering what my caster level will be when i become one and cast a first level AoP spell. thanks in advance |
| Nagol11-06-05, 10:24 AM | I don't have mybooks handy, so I'll answer based upon your description of AoP. You would have 2 separate Caster Levels. If you multiclass into independent casting classes, like Cleric and Wizard, each class maintains its own caster level. A rule of thumb is if the classes have seperate spell progression then the caster levels are separate. So you would have Caster Level of 8 when casting clerical spells and a caster level of 1 when casting AoP spells. |
| Eilistraeeeee11-06-05, 10:29 AM | but cleric and wizard spellcasting is a hell of a lot different than Wizard and AoP. they are both divine, you would say that my character would have some feeling for divine magic already when he enters AoP. Or am i too much realistic and less rules lawyering?? well, anyway, i'll hear from some of you guys. thanks for the fast response |

D&D isn't meant to be perfectly "realistic" (if your logic can even be called such, which is far from sure.) Let's not forget that you're talking about how two seperate methods for casting magic spells interact. You don't stack caster levels when you multiclass wizard and sorcerer nor cleric and druid. Those are the rules of D&D. They have nothing to do with being "rules lawyering." |
| Nightspirit11-06-05, 11:26 AM | Take a better read at the AoP before ask :P to determine the AoP CL you add your AoL levels with one half your caster level in other spellcasting classes so a cleric 8/AoP 4 has a CL as AoP of 4+(8/2)=8. Its CL as a cleric isn't changed(AoP levels don't stack with cleric levels to determine your cleric CL) |

They have nothing to do with being "rules lawyering." I was given to understand that you do stack caster level when you multi-class wizard and sorcerer. Not for number of spells, but for spell effects. I have never attempted this, nor have I read on the subject at all, I was just informed by other players that the two stacked so a Wizard 4/Sorcere4 would have the spells of a 4th wizard (2nd level max spells) and a 4th level sorcerer (2nd level max spells), but when cast, the caster would use 8 for his caster level (so 4 magic missiles per spell, 8 rounds for summon monster, etc.) Was I misinformed? |

"is equal to your class level in the class you are using to cast the spell" (PH pg 171). Nowhere in the Sor/Wiz rules does it say that CL stacks. The levels do stack for the purposes of determining familiar abilities (PH pg 52), but not otherwise. That said, there are a variety of optional rules that exist to deal with the multiclass caster level situation. Practiced Spellcaster is one. It grants up to a +4 CL to a class based on cross-class levels. |
| Lord Schpungus11-06-05, 10:30 PM | Yeah. Caster levels never stack (except for AoP and Ur-Priest, and they specifically let you). |
