When you cast a spell that relies on caster level is the level of the spell the current arcana caster level like wizard 4 or is it the levels above the spell level. For example: magic missile that does 1d4+1 per caster level(I'm really not sure what it is actually) and lets say it is a lv 3 spell and I'm a lv 3 wizard (and you get to cast lv 3 spells at lv 3). Would the damage be 3d4+3 or would it be 1d4+1 because I just got the spell. This question is sort of related to the previous question. When casting a spell with the relies on caster level, do u need to take a spell slot of the lv u want it to be to use that caster lv. For example withthe magic missile thing. I'm now wizard lv 5 and want to cast a lv 5 (assuming u get lv 5 spells at lv 5) magic missile do I need to use up a lv 5 spell slot or just the same old lv 3 spell slot that it originally cast and get it to do max damage that i would be able to do? Last question is for weapon modifiers. For the modifiers at the end of weapon names like longsword +1, what do you add the +1 to. Do you put it to the damage roll, attack roll, or both? Thanks for your answers. |

Caster level simply means the total number of levels a character has in either divine spellcasting or arcane spellcasting. Magic Missile does 1d4+1 damage. For every 2 caster levels beyond 1st, you gain an additional missile. Therefore, your 3rd level wizard (caster level 3) casts magic missile and two bolts of energy fly to his target, dealing 2d4+2 force damage. A 9th-level wizard would have a caster level of 9, and would have 5 missiles every time he cast magic missile (dealing 5d4+5 points of force damage). The spell slot remains the same, unless you use metamagic to add effects to a spell. Variables depend on the caster level. My 3rd-level wizard (caster level 3) casts magic missile as a 1st level spell. He gets two missiles from the spell. My 9th-level wizard (caster level 9) casts magic missile as a 1st-level spell. He gets five missiles from the spell, still only using a 1st-level spell slot. Originally posted by Defaltkilla Last question is for weapon modifiers. You add the weapon bonus to both attack rolls and damage rolls. |
