| -Kynn-06-10-05, 12:03 AM | I am trying to figure out the system for creating magical items. The DM and PHB state that the person creating the item does not need to be able to cast the spells. Does the caster that is casting the spell need to know the item specialty? For example. Say I have a character that once to create a ring of protection +1 Bardy the bard is a 12th lvl bard with forge ring feat (assume he has all the other requirments except the spell casting like metalsmith). Clarice is a 5th lvl cleric. Can Bardy make the ring with Clarice casting the spell for him? If Bardy was a 9th lvl bard and a 3rd lvl wizard (total for '12' different casting levels) can he take the forge ring feat? Kynn |

If Bardy was a 9th lvl bard and a 3rd lvl wizard (total for '12' different casting levels) can he take the forge ring feat?Generally speaking, no. The two caster levels do not stack. You would have a CL of 9 as a bard and a CL of 3 as a wizard. However, if you took practiced spellcaster: bard, your CL would be sufficient to take forge ring. Hope that helps. |

Great help so far, but I think I did not explain part of a question right. Bardy is 'still' a 12th lvl character, has 9 lvls in Bard and 3 lvls in Wizard, doeas that make him 12th lvl caster? (Clarifing that I did not mean a 9th lvl bard char and a 3rd lvl wizard char) This clarification brings me to s side question that your answer has brought, do the schools need to be the same, like if he was 9 lvls wizard and 3 lvls socer or the same for cleric/paladin? and if so, what does bard join with? (Clarifing that I did not mean a 9th lvl bard char and a 3rd lvl wizard char)Yes, he's a 12th level character. But the prerequisite for Forge Ring is a caster level of 12, and Bardy doesnt have that unless he takes practiced spellcaster to compensate for his multiclassing. do the schools need to be the same, like if he was 9 lvls wizard and 3 lvls socer or the same for cleric/paladin? and if so, what does bard join with? I'm not sure what you mean by "do the schools need to be the same?" Are you asking if a wizard 9/sorcerer 3 would have a caster level of 12? If so, the answer is no. The casting abilities of base classes do not stack together. If thats not what you meant, then could you please rephrase your question? |
| -Kynn-06-10-05, 01:28 AM | You answered most of it, but again this gives me another question,.. I am not familiar with practice spellcaster, what schools stack with that skill? Where can I find more information on practice spellcaster. Thanks for all the help, Kynn |

Your example Bardy the Bard is a Brd 9 / Wiz 3. So he is Bard caster level 9, Wiz caster level 3 and a total character level 12. If he takes Practiced Spellcaster before 12th level and uses it to raise his spellcasting level for Bard, he gets to act as if he is a 12th level bard when determining the effects of spells. He can then take Forge Ring at 12th level because his Bard caster level is 12th. He does not get treated as Caster Level 13 because his total character level is 12. However, as far as spells known and spells castable per day, he remains a 9th level bard. |
