I'm having trouble determining when a, "+ whatever per whatever caster levels," is.

For example, Melf's Acid Arrow says it does 2d4 damage and then lasts another round for every 3 caster levels you possess.

Well, does that mean that it will last another round when your a 3rd level caster, or a 4th level caster? I can't seem to find anywhere's in the Player's Handbook where it specifies one way or the other.

Most spells have their own conditions for when they have extra effects.

With Melf's Acid Arrow, it lasts 1 additional round for each 3 caster levels, period. It is a level 2 spell, which means you need at least 3 caster levels just to use it. It lasts one round extra when it is first available.

At CL 6, it is 2 rounds extra, CL 9 is 3 rounds extra, etc.

Every Three Caster Levels means just that. At 3rd level, you have 3 caster levels, so you get another round. At 6th level, you have two sets of 3 caster levels, so you get another round.

Ok, thanks for the quick response. I just wanted to make sure before I go and run my game with the NPCs I've got planned and do something wrong (wrong damage/duration) that drastically affects the outcome.
