Does a 6th lvl Sorcerer get 3 or 6 dice for fireball damage? Which would answer my question about what exactly is a caster level when describing spells.

thanks for any info

Caster level = your total levels in a certain casting class. a 6th level sorcerer is a 6th level character with a caster level of 6. A sorcerer 6/monk 4 is a 10th level character with a caster level of 6.

Where did you get the idea that your caster level is somehow 3, anyways? I'm genuinely confused. O_o

i think he was assuming spell level = caster level.

or maybe highest level spell you can cast is your caster level (ie if you can cast 5th level spells your caster level is 5)

As a 6th lvl Sorcerer, you can cast spells as high as '3rd level' spells.
As a 6th lvl Sorcerer, you can cast spells, at caster level of 6.
As a 6th lvl Sorcerer, your character level is 6.
If you take one level of prestige class, its 'class level' is 1(usually, the description says only 'class level' when it has a level-dependent ability) and your character level is 7.
