| celestialblue01-22-06, 03:06 PM | I feel a bit silly asking such a simple question, but it's been a while since I've played, and my mind is going blank on the topic. When casting a spell in combat, does the caster have to make an attack roll to see if their spell is successful? Thanks ahead of time. |
| smrtgmp01-22-06, 03:19 PM | It depends on the spell. If the spell requires an attack roll, then yes. If the spell is targeted or has an area of effect, then no. Check out the mechanical header at the top of every spell for more info. |

Check out the mechanical header at the top of every spell for more info. Upon further reading of the spells, I finally found one that does require a ranged touch attack. See, I had read about that, the ranged and melee touch attacks and knew that they required a roll, but I wasn't sure about the ones that have a specific target. I had thought that you might have to roll against the target's AC still, which is why I was asking. Thanks! |
| smrtgmp01-22-06, 03:28 PM | Correct. For instance, ray spells will specify that they require a ranged touch attack. Chill touch will inform you that you need to make a melee touch attack. Just read the spell description and it will tell you everything you need to know (for the most part; some spells include confusing mechanics and are poorly written). |
