| thadrine05-19-06, 10:07 PM | I have a problem and could use some guidance. A player can choose to cast a spell defensively, if successful it does not provoke an attack of opportunity. What if it is a touch spell? Performing any kink of melee attack unarmed still does provoke an AoO without special feats or whatever. Am I right in thinking this, or does the spell make the attack armed for the sake of not provoking an AoO? |
| Esponer05-19-06, 10:08 PM | In a bizarre twist of logic, when a clumsy spellcaster reaches out to touch somebody and thus deliver a touch spell, they provoke no attack of opportunity. |
| thadrine05-19-06, 10:12 PM | I like the idea that the spell makes her "Armed." |
| Karak_Nechot05-19-06, 10:18 PM | Touch Attacks: Touching an opponent with a touch spell is considered to be an armed attack and therefore does not provoke attacks of opportunity. However, the act of casting a spell does provoke an attack of opportunity. Touch attacks come in two types: melee touch attacks and ranged touch attacks. You can score critical hits with either type of attack. Your opponent’s AC against a touch attack does not include any armor bonus, shield bonus, or natural armor bonus. His size modifier, Dexterity modifier, and deflection bonus (if any) all apply normally. The rules agree with you. |

| TheFallenWriter05-19-06, 10:22 PM | yes, Nechot is right. The AoO comes form the spell casting, whcih you can negate with defensively casting a spell (DC 15+ spell level). ~The Fallen |

Yeah, that Night's Caress is one nasty spell for 5th lvl. |

Am I right in thinking this, or does the spell make the attack armed for the sake of not provoking an AoO? Casting defensively does not provoke an AoO. Nor does making an attack with a touch spell (as mentioned, it's counted as armed). So the caster can cast and touch with no problems. |
| Dragonsblood05-20-06, 01:49 PM | Just an extra FYI, if a caster wants they can cast a touch spell away from their target and hold the charge as long as they want. Then on any future turn they can make a touch attack. The catch is that if they forget they had a charge held and accidently touch themselves or a friend, the spell still discharges. They also can't hold multiple spells at once. |
