Are there any penalties for casting spells with somatic components from prone?

Yeah, not knowing this almost cost one character his life. A while back the wizard had the misfortune of being flanked by two worgs. Of course, worgs being worgs he ended up on his back between the two. Thinking that he couldn't cast from this position he tried to stand-up. The worgs weren't very forgiving.

The worgs weren't very forgiving. The Worgs weren't going to be very forgiving of him casting a spell while being threatened either. :D

That's the rub. His Concentration skill plus Combat Casting pretty much allows him to cast defensively and fail on pretty much anything except 1 or 2. So it was a much better bet than standing up.

All is well though, the player and character learned a valuable lesson that day. Well two really. Yes you can cast from prone, and always kill the worg-rider first...fewer hit points and the worg is less willing to fight if the rider can't negate the first hit with a ride check.
