I'm sure this has been asked before, but I have a few casters in my group (wizard and warlock) and they wanted to know if there were any ruls regarding casting while falling. I know Feather Fall is a swift action for the wizard, saving his life in a blink. But what about the warlock? Could he use his Flee the Scene invocation while free falling down a chasm? Let's use as an example a 200 ft. drop. Would he have the chance to cast that SLA? Would there be any mechanics applied, like a concentration check? Much help is appreciated, thank you.

He might need to make a concentration check. I would say normal falling would be Vigorous motion, DC 10.

Higher DC's seem to involve changes in direction, not a steady movement.

I think it'd be reasonable to incur an Arcane Spell failure chance of 10% for a spell using a Somatic component. How could you maneuver precisely while in free fall?

See the description for losing stability on Levitate.

Vigorous motion would also be reasonable....

Would he have the chance to cast that SLA?The FAQ entry calculates a character will fall around 500 feet in the first round and about 1,200 feet in successive rounds - so generally, without an immediate or readied action, you've got trouble.

Hm, it used to be 150ft the first round and then 200ft each subsequent round. Been a long time since I've played though.

Regardless, I'd say you need at LEAST a Concentration check of 10. I usually went with 15 due to the shock/panic of falling.

Won't this depend on an action sequence?
Whose turn are you falling in?
Have you taken any actions?
Doesn't Flee the Scene require a standard action to invoke?
How far are you falling (more than 1 round's distance)?
I believe we need to answer most of these questions to adequately address the OP's question.

The scenario was completely hypothetical. The warlock in question is level 4, nd has yet to attain the Flee the Scene invocation. He was asking me for future referrence. I guess this question could apply to different casters as well (druids wildshaping in mid air, a sorcerer casting fly, etc.)
