If I'm threatened when I cast a quickened/swift spell, do I need to cast on Defensive to avoid AoO or is the action by nature quick enough to avoid such trouble? I'd imagine, if it takes virtually no time, opponent wouldn't have time to take attack of opportunity, but I haven't found a mention of it anywhere in the rules, which leads me to believe normal rules apply. How is it?

normally an attack is a standard action, but a critter can make an attack of oppotunity even if it has ALREADY TAKEN an attack for that round. furthermore, using the AoO option when its available won't take up an action for the next round or even a swift/free action for the current round. thus i personally would rule that an AoO takes just as little time as a quickened spell, & therefore one would need to cast defensively even for quickened/swift spells.

Swift actions provoke no AoOs. This is in the definition of a swift action, usually the very last sentence, depending on what book you have.

From the SRD:

QUICKEN SPELL [METAMAGIC]

Benefit: Casting a quickened spell is a free action. You can perform another action, even casting another spell, in the same round as you cast a quickened spell. You may cast only one quickened spell per round. A spell whose casting time is more than 1 full round action cannot be quickened. A quickened spell uses up a spell slot four levels higher than the spell’s actual level. Casting a quickened spell doesn’t provoke an attack of opportunity.

Special: This feat can’t be applied to any spell cast spontaneously (including sorcerer spells, bard spells, and cleric or druid spells cast spontaneously), since applying a metamagic feat to a spontaneously cast spell automatically increases the casting time to a full-round action.

Thanks then. I must've been careless when reading, since I've noticed no such mention -.- I guess that means I don't need to give a fightermage bazillion ranks in Concentrate...
