| SoldierOfFortune18707-08-06, 05:13 PM | Casting any form of spell within an Antimagic Field is suppressed (unless specifically overruled in the spell's text), and counts against the duration of the spell. Spells with a duration of instantaneous are effectively useless, because that instant effect is suppressed, while lasting spells would function (such as Shield, Mage Armor, etc), assuming you move outside of the field . Casting a spell with range that does not require ranged touch (such as Charm Person) would be suppressed within the field, and not function until you removed yourself from the field. The important points to consider in what you can do within an AMF is that spells cast within or into are suppressed, not dispelled. Duration continues as normal, but effect ceases. |
| tarkin07-08-06, 06:52 PM | It is incorrect to think you could spend an aciton in an AMF to cast, and when you leave the AMF the spell would come into existence. The act of casting a magical spell is itself a magical act. As such, not only are spells surpressed while in the field, but you can not even cast them in the field. It is sort of like trying to use a match to light a coal fire in a vacuum. The matchitself never lites up, so you can't light the coal. But if the coal was lit outside the vacuum, it could be taken into the vacuum and retain it's temperature. When it left the vacuum it would ignite again. AMF also blocks line of effect, preventing you from being out of the field and casting Charm Person on someone in the field. That is it is not correct that you could cast a charm person on someone in the field, then when they come out it they would be charmed. Because AMF blocks line of effect, that does not work. |
| Chainsaw07-08-06, 07:11 PM | Casting a spell inside an AMF automatically fails. Spells with a duration (when cast outside the AMF first) are suppressed , not dispelled, and any area effects cast outside with a center outside the AMF work normally in the normal area but fail to affect anything in the AMF. |
| djbabygod07-08-06, 08:45 PM | ok, how about a ray or line whose line of effect passes through an AMF? thats the big one i'm curious about. |
| runestar07-08-06, 11:02 PM | I think he is referring to the initiate of mystra feat, which, apart from adding several choice spells to your cleric spell list, also lets you succeed at casting spells in an AMF if you succeed on a caster lv check. |
| cwslyclgh07-09-06, 03:01 AM | ok, how about a ray or line whose line of effect passes through an AMF? thats the big one i'm curious about. AMF blocks line of effect so a ray or a line that would pass through the AMF stops at the edge of it, and can't hit anything with in or beyond it. |
| djbabygod07-09-06, 07:05 PM | AMF blocks line of effect so a ray or a line that would pass through the AMF stops at the edge of it, and can't hit anything with in or beyond it. ok then, no line or rays. how about say I'm on one side of the AMF and my target is on the other. both out of the area of the AMF. would the AMF affect my line of effect for, say, PWK or the like, simply targeted spells? |
| mvincent07-09-06, 07:05 PM | I thought there was a thread a while back that says you can but I can't find it. Any one know where it is? Or can someone explain it?Spell-shaping could possibly help you do this. |
| cwslyclgh07-09-06, 07:37 PM | how about say I'm on one side of the AMF and my target is on the other. both out of the area of the AMF. would the AMF affect my line of effect for, say, PWK or the like, simply targeted spells?an AMF between you and the target will block any spell that requires line of effect, which means it will block most target spells (with the exception of scrying and the like). |
| djbabygod07-09-06, 08:08 PM | an AMF between you and the target will block any spell that requires line of effect, which means it will block most target spells (with the exception of scrying and the like). so by your interpretation, a semi-competently placed AMF ruins all magic, not only in its AoE but the entire battlefield. that's a powerful interpretation. can you show me where this is supported in the RAW or FAQ? |
| Sancus07-09-06, 08:22 PM | so by your interpretation, a semi-competently placed AMF ruins all magic, not only in its AoE but the entire battlefield. that's a powerful interpretation. can you show me where this is supported in the RAW or FAQ? What do you mean, entire battlefield? Line of effect through a silly little 20ft diameter bubble doesn't cover a whole battlefield behind it unless you are standing right in front of it. In which case, you can easily just change your angle. "Line of effect" means you need a straight, unobstructed line to your target. Obstructions are physical objects. AMF merely counts as a "magical" object which blocks this line for the purpose of spells. That is certainly useful but it's a far cry from being super powerful. |
| mvincent07-09-06, 08:31 PM | can you show me where this is supported in the RAW or FAQ?The 3.0 FAQ says: "the antimagic field blocks line of effect" |
| cwslyclgh07-09-06, 08:32 PM | what Sancus said. |
| lint trap07-09-06, 08:42 PM | The Initiate of Mystara feat, by the way, allows you to cast within (and presumably through) an Antimagic Field with a caster level check vs. DC 11+ the Antimagic caster level. |
| djbabygod07-09-06, 09:57 PM | What do you mean, entire battlefield? Line of effect through a silly little 20ft diameter bubble doesn't cover a whole battlefield behind it unless you are standing right in front of it. problem is though that it's mobile, being an emination, so merely getting near a spellcaster enough so there isn't a valid angle between him/her and your allies is enough to completely neuter him/her. and yeah, whole battlefield. in most fights I'm in the room/dungeon/cave, etc. isn't more than MAYBE 100 ft. across. imagine a chess board 10 squares by 10 squares with a 4 square by 4 square bubble in the dead center. try to draw lines from one side to the other without any point crossing that bubble. i'm saying that, in effect, the consequences of the AMF extend (potentially) far beyond its stated AoE. Also, for clarification, the orb spells from complete arcane and later spell compendium, should work through it because of the passage "the effects of instantaneous conjurations, such as create water, are not afected by an antimagic field because the conjuration itself is no longer in effect, only its result". correct? |
| cwslyclgh07-09-06, 11:03 PM | Also, for clarification, the orb spells from complete arcane and later spell compendium, should work through it because of the passage "the effects of instantaneous conjurations, such as create water, are not afected by an antimagic field because the conjuration itself is no longer in effect, only its result". correct?unfortunatly correct... although I highly doubt that was intended. |
| djbabygod07-10-06, 04:14 AM | unfortunatly correct... although I highly doubt that was intended. I don't see why not. it is a conjured orb of acid. its actual physical acid. just like if I used magic to create an arrow and then shot it it wouldn't blink out because it's a real genuine arrow after the spell has been cast. |
| Witch07-10-06, 05:06 AM | I don't see why not. it is a conjured orb of acid. its actual physical acid. just like if I used magic to create an arrow and then shot it it wouldn't blink out because it's a real genuine arrow after the spell has been cast. Because real, conjured acid/fire/lightning/cold/force/sound naturally possess the shape of an orb? |
| Thiez07-10-06, 06:02 AM | If you 'conjure' it and it is a real object after that, you should be able to put those orbs of acid / force / cold / sound / fire / lightning in a bag and use them as ammunition for your sling. Is this true? No. Would you allow a wizard to create flasks of acid by casting Acid Splash? No? thought so. The orbs are (imho) in the wrong school. |
