An antimagic field question came up today.

My player wants to know if he can cast an antimagic field on himself and cast spells outside of the field. The text of the spell suprising lacks a yes or no on this subject as does the antimagic section of the DMG.

Since it doesn't say no it sorta implies yes but that just feels wrong to me that you can cast magic from within a magic dead area???

As an example can you cast a flamestrike from within an antimagic field so long as the flamestrike doesn't strike within the field?

Thanks,

As an example can you cast a flamestrike from within an antimagic field so long as the flamestrike doesn't strike within the field? No, you cannot. The 3.0 FAQ clarified that an antimagic field blocks line of effect.

Why they didn't bother to rewrite the 3.5 spell description to say so is a complete mystery to me.

You can, provided you have the initiate of mystra feat from PGTF. It lets you cast spells in an AMF or dead magic zone.:)

There's also the Invoke Magic spell from Lords of Madness. If I remember correctly you can use the Extraordinary Spell Aim feat to cast out of an anti-magic field as well.

An archmage can cast Antimagic Field on themselves and shape it to make a whole in the middle where there standing. Then they can cast spells outside of the field.

Just because he is standing in a "hole" in the field does not mean he can cast spells which require line of effect to pass through the field. As Vegepygmy said, Line of Effect cannot pass through any part of an AMF. The only person the Archmage can affect with his spells is himself.

(Houserule alert.
That idea would not work in my game. The caster may not exclude himself from an area spell centred on himself. He can only exclude someone else.)

1) Antimagic prevents line of effect and also surpresses.

2) The casting of magical spells is itself a magical act. As such, it is surpressed. You can not cast while in an anti-magic area.

3) As it blocks line of effect, you can not cast a magic spell into an anti-magic area. HOWEVER...

4) You can use magic outside an anti-magic area to create non-magical effects that can affect creatures inside an anti-magic zone.

The typical examples for #4 include:

Casting an Orb of Fire spell (or similar spell) while out of the area and throw it into an anti-magic area.
While outside the area, casting an Earthquake spell and centering it next to *(but still outside) an anti-magic area
While outside the area, create a corporeal Undead, or Gate in an Elemental and send them into the area

Well, Faerun is broken altogether, so ...

2) The casting of magical spells is itself a magical act. As such, it is surpressed. You can not cast while in an anti-magic area. This is largely irrelevant to the case under discussion, which is that an Archmage with Mastery of Shaping has cast an Antimagic Field with a 5' square hole in the middle of the emanation which is not affected by that emanation. The Archmage just happens to be occupying that square. If you allow this trick to work (I don't) the character can freely cast spells, but only on himself because he has no line of effect to any other space.

NO! Not a 5' hole dude, be more inventive. Make it a hole 3 inches from the outside of your skin. :D

Actually this would work. Mastery of shaping specifically allows shaping of emanations and anti-magic field is an emanation. Cast anti-magic field with a hole in the middle for yourself, then blast away using only instantaneous conjurations (like Blast of Flame) since such spells work just fine through antimagic fields.

I just houserule it out.

I also rule that line of effect applies even to instantaneous conjurations, and AMF blocks line of effect.
