| Arkham0008-10-06, 08:18 AM | Googling only found this (from : http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/mi/20050707b ) : immediate/immediate action: (Keyword) A type of swift action (see that entry) that a creature can trigger instantly at a specified time, sometimes even when it is not its turn. This action can interrupt other actions, taking effect just before they do. The last immediate action declared takes place first. Since it is from miniatures hb ,i m not sure if it is applicable as universal rule. I was thinking about spels like Energy Aegis or Deflect (PHBII),for instance if a wizard cast a fireball can i use Energy Aegis to reduce 20 fire damages from that fireball ?Maybe i need a spellcraft check,or not? Or if a warrior try to hit me with AC 25,and he scores 26,so can i use deflect avoiding that attack? It's seems like instant cards from "Magic" isn't it? But otherwise i can't see any usefullness about such a spell without this intepretation... Tnx. |
| fansy08-10-06, 08:25 AM | That's about right. Immediate spells are generally cast in response to something about to happen. Dunno if it's specifically laid out in the rules, but I'd say most DM's might require a spellcraft check before knowing to protect against a fireball (or fire), specifically...or else how would you know what element to protect against? |
| Todd08-10-06, 09:27 AM | First you are flatfooted when suprised or before your initiative comes up the first time in combat and you can't cast immediate spells when flatfooted. So you can't always get these spells off when they are needed. Second you will need a spellcraft roll to ID what the foe is tossing your way. You can use, say Energy Aegis, upon seening a cater start a spell and just guess what energy type to protect against ... but you need that spellcraft roll to KNOW that it's a fireball. As for the Deflect IMHO you should be casting that BEFORE the melee guy rolls to hit. Once the D20 goes down it's too late. YMMV. |

Not sure,in this way you have an high chance to wast your slots!Anyways non completely useless. BTW, the point i was interested in, was if immediate action could interrupt/avoid/etc the action of the enemy. So thank you guys ;) |

Except that without metagaming your wizard (or whatever) has no idea whether the attack hit you until the weapon actually damages you or whiffs. Either way too late to buff your AC. BTW, the point i was interested in, was if immediate action could interrupt/avoid/etc the action of the enemy. So thank you guys ;) Yes, that is basically what immediate actions are for, but you do have to keep in mind character knowledge when deciding when to use immediate actions (just like everything else). |
| Arkham0008-11-06, 08:29 AM | IMHO An exepertised guy can have the perception of the enemy' attack is going to hit him or not. (a little twist sentence : P) So if he realize that he is gonna hit he can cast his immediate spell ,just a moment (the amount of time needed by an immediate action ) before the attack resolves . In rule terms the attack is not resolved when the d20 is rolled, but whe the attack is compared with my armor class so : DM - "I scored 20 ,its enough to hit you?" Me - "No more 'couse i cast deflect". Anyone? |
