The only thing I found was that if you want to cast a spell with a fire descriptor, you need to makie a spellcraft DC20+spell level in order to cast it right. Still, the surface of water blocks the spells. What if the spell is not a fire spell ? does it work right ? If the spell has a verbal component, can a "non-amphibian" creature still cast it in water???? |

I believe the rules are silent on how much speaking you can get away with underwater, but I generally let a character get off one verbal spell underwater, then their breath is gone ... essentially, a fighting chance to cast Water Breathing or whathaveyou before they get completely hosed. |

| Millenia05-28-07, 07:59 PM | According to the spell component description (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicOverview/spellDescriptions.htm#components), a "verbal component is a spoken incantation," and "to provide a verbal component, you [the caster] must be able to speak in a strong voice." If you are underwater, you cannot speak in a strong voice. Therefore, one must use Silent Spell to cast some spells underwater. |

I would permit a character under the effects of Water Breathing to speak clearly, personally, but that's just me. :) |

Also, you could spend a little cash and buy the Necklace of Adaptation from the DMG. Necklace of Adaptation: This necklace is a heavy chain with a platinum medallion. The magic of the necklace wraps the wearer in a shell of fresh air, making him immune to all harmful vapors and gases (such as cloudkill and stinking cloud effects, as well as inhaled poisons) and allowing him to breathe, even underwater or in a vacuum. Moderate transmutation; CL 7th; Craft Wondrous Item, alter self; Price 9,000 gp. :D |
