I know that casting a targeted spell, such as a ray, into an area of total concealment incurs the normal 50% miss chance for ranged attackes, but what about area spells like fireball. Is it as simple as using the 50% miss chance to detemine if you can center the affect at the desired location? What if you miss? Does the spell fail or would you perhaps use the scattergram to see where the center was misplaced? I have not been able to locate a specific mechanic for this yet.

Area of Effect spells are not subject to miss chance for conceilment, assuming the conceilment is caused by an obstruction of vision or something like that. Firing a fireball into an area of darkness of fog will hit everyone within its area as normal. Conceilment caused by a magical effect such as Blink may deviate from the above (Blink gives you half damage when you are hit with an AoE spell).

In general it's save to assume conceilment does not affect AoE spells. Exceptions will note this in their descriptions.

Edit: And you don't usually miss with AoE spells, AFAIK.

But if the obscurement can cause a miss when using a targeting spell, then why wouldn't there be a chance to misplace the area affect spell since you cannot see the indended center point?

Because you don't say, for example 'fireball explode over there', you say 'fireball, go 95 feet and explode', basically. :)
