| Edymnion01-15-05, 05:36 PM | Anyone else notice this item in Complete Adventurer, and go "what the frell?" Once per day, the wearer can make a Concentration check in place of a Fortitude save. There isn't a spellcaster on the face of the earth that isn't going to want this thing, and its relatively cheap to boot (as in you could get one by 4th-5th level). Yeah, lets take one of the main weaknesses of spellcasters, and give them an item to transfer that weakness over to a skill check that any sane spellcaster is going to either keep high, or max out entirely. I really don't get it. 3.5 nerfed so many spells because "wizards were too strong" on one hand, but on the other hand, they constantly make things that cover every single weakness they have. *sigh* |
| DM Zoc01-15-05, 05:57 PM | I doubt wizards would want one; it takes up the same slot as their intelligence booster. Clerics and druids already have good Fortitude saves. It's about only useful for sorcerers, who (many people believe) are currently underpowered. |

You could simply take this as a base, and throw intelligence boosting on top of it. Or take the 50% increase in cost and change it over to another, less used slot, like a belt. Or double the price and make it slotless. Its still quite affordable at double the price, and effectively can become a +23 or higher on Fort saves at 20th level, versus a measly +6. Heck, this thing would give a wizard a higher fort save than they have will saves. |

Heck, this thing would give a wizard a higher fort save than they have will saves. You are right, they can have a very high Fort save... ONCE PER DAY!!! So all this talk about them making an item that negates the wizards weak point... I don't know, the second time he has to make a Fort save that day, he is just as weak as ever... I agree it is a useful item, for avoiding very nasty effects, but only once per day... Does not seem so overpowered to me... |
| Pinky's brain01-16-05, 05:56 AM | You can have more than 1, especially if it is slotless. Can my rogue get an item to make tumble checks to evade death effects too? |
| Neverborn01-16-05, 07:39 AM | You can have more than 1, especially if it is slotless. Headband of Conscious Effort... |
| Pinky's brain01-16-05, 09:41 AM | If you can put it in a headband you can put it an another slot if you are allowed the standard magic item pricing rules. Regardless though ... you can simply take it off and put another on. |
| Neverborn01-16-05, 10:55 AM | Riiiight.... excellent point.... Nothing wrong with that.... Good thinking..... Anyway..... |
| Pinky's brain01-16-05, 11:21 AM | That isnt a very cogent retort. |
| Neverborn01-16-05, 11:55 AM | I know, could not be bothered... :) |
| rhoan_0101-16-05, 12:05 PM | First off, I'm not spending precious, golden actions putting on and taking off a headband that lets me do something once per day when I could just erase the poor sucker trying to poison me from the face of the Oerth. Secondly, the once per day is a pretty big equalizer; the assassin we fought last gaming session stabbed my warlock at least a dozen times. Luckily, my Fort rolls were high, and with the Dark Ones Own Luck my CHA added to the mix (Unfortunately, I failed a Will save a round later to a charm. Darn my 6 Wisdom). Finally, as a DM I would rule that just because multiple items exist that give you once/day special abilities, using them more than once wouldn't work. And before you say it, yes it IS different than using a wand or potion; you're jacking your mind into your metabolism and concentrating to ward off whatever just hit your bloodstream, something will take a lot out of you and you probably wouldn't want to subject yourself to more than once per day, if ever. |
| Pinky's brain01-16-05, 12:10 PM | Well it isnt about poison in the first place, it is about save or die stuff. |
| Edymnion01-16-05, 01:13 PM | Yeah, and if you have multiples, you can trade them out between fights. I dunno about you, but with a quick reslotting, there's no reason not to have this thing. Yeah, its once per day. Thats also basically being immune to death magic once per day. And for a base 4k gold, thats a damned good deal. |
| Kyuketsukiouji01-16-05, 01:52 PM | The first thing my spellcaster would do is extrapolate the formulat to add more uses per day... 4-5 sounds about good. |
| Edymnion01-16-05, 04:00 PM | The first thing my spellcaster would do is extrapolate the formulat to add more uses per day... 4-5 sounds about good.5 uses per day might as well be unlimited as far as pricing goes... |
| Kyuketsukiouji01-16-05, 08:22 PM | 5 uses per day might as well be unlimited as far as pricing goes... There are times at high level where 5 fort saves is a question of one encouter. And let's not go into Epic play, where 5 fort saves in a round isn't impossible... Unlimited use per day would be...well, I can tell you that'd be easily in the top 5 magic items my spellcasters would go after. |
| robertliguori01-17-05, 09:05 AM | The first thing my spellcaster would do is extrapolate the formulat to add more uses per day... 4-5 sounds about good. So, four or five times a day, you could make a concentration check once a day. Don't see the point, myself. :) |
| Turin01-17-05, 09:54 AM | Yeah, and if you have multiples, you can trade them out between fights. I dunno about you, but with a quick reslotting, there's no reason not to have this thing. Yeah, its once per day. Thats also basically being immune to death magic once per day. And for a base 4k gold, thats a damned good deal. This would be 10% or more of a standard PCs wealth until 10th-level, assuming you didn't re-slot it and had a cost of 4000gp. Is being immune to a single special attack once per day worth 4000gp? Probably. Does it become more valuable if it isn't slotted as a heaband and you have more than one? Sure! But now you're spending 8000gp for each one, and Pelor forbid you should be attacked by something with multiple death/poison attacks in an encounter, because all that money you spent won't seem like a good investment when you're dodging a wyvern's sting and can't switch headbands. Seems like an awful lot to spend for any character who isn't already high level (and who probably has better things to spend his money on and has defenses like his cleric buddy's death ward spell). I don't think this item is too bad, but YMMV. :) |
