Can anyone tell me if there is any official rulings about this spell. Basically I have allowed one of my players to use it and overall have no problem with it. It causes 2d6 damage per round to Evil Outsiders. Now as the party have just gone to the 506th layer of the Abyss (Shackled City Adventure Path) it has become a bit of a nuisance. I don't want to simply outlaw the spell as this would seem to be a poor show on my part; but apart from the damage the really big pain about the spell is its duration: 1 day/level ! Yep that is 1 DAY per level.

So I am hoping that there is some sort of official ruling where the duration is reduced or those taking damage get a Spell Resistance check - oh didn't I mention that the spell summary says Spell Resistance: No. It is a right pain.

Thanks for your time

I've never seen anything offical about this spell.....but I can offer a copper or two...

1.The spell sure acts as a BEACON of 'look over here, good guys to kill'. There is simply no sneaking around with a brighter then sunlight object.
2.Intelligent foes will simply avoid getting in 60 feet of the bright object. Using ranged attacks here.
3.The object itself is a target, as would any useful spell/item. So when the Marilith attacks, she goes right for that object..and not say the tank.
4.Remember that magical darkness negatates the Celestial Brilliance.
5.Not every creature encountered in the Abyss is an Evil Outsider. You can encounter a whole range of other creature types, oozes, plants, constructs, humanoids, ect. And not even all outsiders you encounter will be evil. Slaad can be found in the Abyss, for example. Creatures like Chaos Beasts, Githyanki, Githzerai, and bladelings would not be effected by the spell. You can even make any creature Feindish with the template, as that does not change it's type. So you could have a feindish troll and can walk right through the light.

I haven't seen anything new on it, but I did notice that it did not make it into the spell compendium. In fact the Glory domain, which used to give that spell as a 4th, now has Holy Smite as written in the Spell Compendium. The exact same thing happened with the 5th level domain spell for Glory, no Crown of Flame spell in the Spell Compendium, and now Glory has Holy Sword instead. Interesting changes but I'm not sure if that means anything.

As far as using it in the Abyss, sure it is a nice thing to have, but yeah it will draw some attanetion to the group, and any fiend with a detect good or detect magic, or depending on the DM a decent spellcraft will be able to figure out what object is radiating the source of pain and take care of it real quick.

It would also make chatting up the locals a bit difficult, I mean sometimes you need to talk to the fiends after all.
