I had an interesting idea for a spell in the "Greater Disintegrate - why not?" thread, but unfortunately, after my post there, the thread curled up and died, so I'm reposting the spell here. I'm just curious to see how this spell stacks up in power.

Chain Disintegrate

Transmutation
Level: Sor/Wiz 9, Drd 9 (just kidding :P)
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level), 30 ft; see text
Effect: 1 ray ; see text
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: Fortitude partial (object)
Spell Resistance: Yes

A thin green ray shoots out from your fingertips, instantly turning the target to dust, bounces to another target, and continues, leaving only several small piles of dust.

A thin green ray springs from your pointing finger. You must make a successful ranged touch attack to hit. Any creature struck by the ray takes 2d6 points of damage per caster level (to a maximum of 60d6). Any creature reduced to 0 or fewer hit points by this ray is entirely disintegrated, leaving behind only a trace of fine dust. The disintegrated creature’s equipment is unaffected. If the creature is disintegrated in such a manner, the ray, at your choosing, can arch to another target within 30 feet of the original target. This target takes damage equal to one half of the original. If this creature is disintegrated, the ray can arch to another target within 30 feet of the second target. The ray continues to bounce this way until a target is not disintegrated, damage halving each time.

When used against an object, the ray simply disintegrates as much as one 10-foot cube of nonliving matter. Thus, the spell disintegrates only part of any very large object or structure targeted. The ray affects even objects constructed entirely of force, such as forceful hand or a wall of force, but not magical effects such as a globe of invulnerability or an antimagic field. When used against objects, the ray does not arch.

A creature or object that makes a successful Fortitude save is partially affected, taking only one quarter of damage it would have normally taken. If this damage reduces the creature or object to 0 or fewer hit points, it is entirely disintegrated. If a creature that makes it saves is disintegrated, the ray can continue to bounce.

Arcane Material Component:
A lodestone and several pinches of dust.

So? What do you think?

I think you should increase the amount of nonliving matter destroyed to 20 or 30 cubic feet. Cap the damage at 60d6 or 70d6 :)

Sphere of Ultimate Destruction from Complete Arcane and the Spell Compendium always struck me as the "Greater Disintegrate"

Also, isn't disintegrate a spell that can be modified by the Chain Spell Metamagic feat? If so, that kind of negates the usefulness of this spell (except for the higher damage cap >_>)

I've never heard of Chain Spell, what does it do?
Damn it, I used to know this website which was a feat index of every single feat in every single book with complete descriptions... but my computer was formatted.. :weep:

1) Well, the idea behind Chain Disintegrate isn't that it's an extremely powerful disintegrate, it's that it's about as powerful as a normal one (aside from the damage cap), but instead bounces. So I left the 10-ft cube as it was.

2) The damage cap is pretty low, now that I think about it. Only 5 more levels of improvement over the normal version. 60d6, I guess?
