Magic jar can technically be affected by chain spell metamagic.

What would you rule this does?

The spell affects the first target normally then affects a bunch of other people.

I could see the first person being put in the jar, then everyone around him have nowhere to go, so they are slain instantly, but what about the mage's life force? Can it occupy multiple people at once (that's what the metamagic should do, but I don't think it can do it).

Would it be like a cloning affect, with each one having their own mind but all with the same mindset? Or would it be like a guy controlling 20 bodies at once?

The problem is timing. If a soul has nowhere to go it dies. According to the wording of the metamagic the first guy would be put in the gem, then the wizard would enter his body, then after that the wizard would arc to the nearby people all at the same time.

Could work any number of ways. . .

everyone could be body swapped with the wizard occupying a random one and a random one in the jar

Everyone could die and the wizard could control them all, with one "lucky" guy trapped in the gem

Everyone could die, including the wizard, just because of a glitch in the matrix.

I'd make an adhoc ruling that chain spell doesn't work.

I'd probably say that all the target souls are forced into the gem together, and that the mage can only control one body at a time, but can change from one to the other once per round. The others are "lifeless" for the duration.

Both good rulings, what about if you were using it to target mindless undead?

The spell description says "Only sentient undead creatures have, or are, souls." I take that to mean that they are immune to magic jar.

I see no reasons for ad hoc ruling.

Magic Jar first targets yourself. Then in later rounds, you target additional people, taking a full round action to do that.

Technically Magic Jar is poorly written, it is not really "one Target".

But lets pretend that it does qualify for Chain Spell.

Chain spell would let you target multiple people, but it SAYS they are successive.

That is, it goes in order.

So, what happens when you chain it?

First you attempt to possess another person. If in that full round action, you succeed, you leave the jar and take over their body. If you fail, you stay in the jar.

In eaither case, the Chain spell keeps going. The person in the jar (read the spell, you can only take over another person if you are in the jar) gets to try and take over someone one else.

So if you suceed in Chaining Magic Jar, then what happens is you get multiple attempts to take over someone's body all in one round. Whenever you suceed, your VICTIM then gets to keep trying to take over someone elses body.

At no point does more than one soul end up in the jar. At no point do you contorl multiple bodies.

It is not a wise thing to do.

Better to just admit that despite saying "Target: one creature", this spell in fact targets multiple creatures.

No doubt. I thought it a strange "Target:" anyway. If anything it should be personal & one creature at a time.
