| Uratoh05-22-05, 05:48 PM | I'm making up a Changeling Wizard/Recaster for a backup in Eberron, and I'm debating the merits of their Dual Illusion/Transmutation specialization...the schools I ca nsee myself giving up would be Evocation, Conjuration, and Necromancy...my main worry is what my 'combat power' would be, aside from using Shadow Evoc/Conj...I'm fairly sure I'm going spell focus/greater with illusion in that case...any peoplegot stuff to chime in on this? |
| smrtgmp05-22-05, 06:04 PM | There are some very strong offensive spells in transmutation, so you should be OK in that department. Transmutation has all the best arcane buffs, so use them well. Polymorph is the party fighter's wet dream. Turn him into the troll of your choice and have him go to town. Disintegrate, flesh to stone, baleful polymorph, etc are all transmutation, and they are all potential fight stoppers. IMO, spell focus transmutation might actually be better than spell focus illusion. Transmutation is also home to some of the most versitile spells in the game. Alter Self (and all the spells that build on it) can be used to overcome so many obsticles its amazing. Telekinisis is another gem, and one you should definately pick up. Illusion is just as versitile as transmutation (or at least it can be, given a reasonable DM). Put your imagination to good use and really work silent/minor/major image for all they're worth. Use them to confound and confuse your enemies. Given that you're a chaneling, I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that you're the sneaky type. As such, make good use of all the disguise and stealth related stuff this school has to offer. Also, as long as you're a changeling and using stuff from RoE, the Recaster is pretty cool. It will allow you to pick up some spells you woulndt otherwise be able to cast and makes metamagic easier to use. Happy Gaming |

| djinni05-22-05, 06:22 PM | also, can I use recaster learning to learn prohibited school spells? it says any spell, so "any spell" however as GM I'd ask you not to take a prohibited school. I'd invest in antimagic field and then "extra ordinary spell aim" |

One that might work well for you is Divine Power. Use it in conjuction with Polymorph and you will be an absolute beast in melee (no pun intended). also, can I use recaster learning to learn prohibited school spells?I would say yes. This is a good way to pick up a spell from a prohibited school that you really dig on. I would say wall of force, but you'll eventually be able to duplicate that with shadow spells. Since you're dropping conjuration, one of the instant-transport spells (dimension door, teleport, greater teleport, etc.) would also be an excellent choice. |
| Uratoh05-24-05, 01:51 PM | Teleportation probably is A good idea, ya...I wouldent have given up conj if we didnt have TWO members of the dragonmarked teleporty house in the party. |
| tarkin05-24-05, 02:24 PM | While Transmutation has asome good spells, I see some MAJOR holes in your offensive abilities. I would not give up all three of Evocation, Conjuration, and Necromancy. Try giving up Enchantment instead of one of the three. |
| smrtgmp05-24-05, 05:04 PM | But enchantment really fits the flavor of a changeling, while flashy offensive spells do not. I suppose it really comes down to who else you have in your party. |
