| Lxarth05-23-05, 02:28 PM | A PC just aquired a Lions Shield, but the PC wants to change it into a "Ram Shield". I don't just want to say no, but looking at this item it is a specific item with pretty concrete abilities. My players is good enough to just accept it if I can it can't be done, but is it possible to change an existing magical item like this? The reason he wants to do this is because his character "sysbol" is a ram. He even has a ram horned helm, and I was almost gonna just make it a "Ram Shield" to begin with, but it is alot funny to have a player try himself to change stuff instead of me just seeding the world with items to help the party. Another question...the Lions Shield does 2d6 damage, does anyone know where they came up with this? Also...when someone activates the ability of the Lion Shield, does he lost the shield benifits like one would if useing a Shield Bash attack? Thank for your help! |

I'd tell the PC that it can't be done, sorry - and then write in some quest/adventure that has that as part of the reward. The PC will get what he wants - but it'll be completely unexpected at that time and you don't have to worry about making fuzzy rules for things. |
| Lxarth05-23-05, 02:38 PM | No, I didn't mean I am wondering about so fast a easy way to change it. But could certain spells do it? They are near enough to a large city with a College of Wizardry to at least inquire about doing it... The player asked me if it can be done and I told him I would think about it and get back to him. |
| tarkin05-23-05, 02:47 PM | I would rule that is an easy allowable change. No power level increase, just a surface level change. As such, I would allow any wizard that can: 1) Cast Fabricate spell 2) Create a Lion's Shield to modify the Lion shield he found into a shield with the exact same properties, but it looks like a Ram instead of a Lion. Price would just be for the casting of the Fabricate spell: 10 gp x 5th level x 9th caster level = 450 gp. If you want to screw with the player a bit, you could claim the wizard was not a good artist, and the "ram" looks a bit whimpy - maybe the ears are abit long and give it a slight rabbit appearance. Unless the player did his home work on checking the wizard's references. |
| Dalthbar05-23-05, 02:48 PM | edit - that works too :) |
| Lxarth05-23-05, 03:11 PM | Tarkin: I was wondering if fabricate could do that, thank for that! I don't think it would be very nice of me to have him go through the trouble of getting it changed for roleplaying reasons only to gimp him on it. I would mush rather have the ram head seem powerfull and well done, with glowing, hellish eyes. 'eh? Hey...the party wizard is 10th level...heck...she could just buy the spell and do it herself...sweet! |
| Jaid05-23-05, 04:47 PM | yeah, but does the party wizard have the craft skill to make it look pretty? and glowing eyes probably wouldn't be so easy... without some sort of minor magical effect (assuming it has absolutely no bonuses in game whatsoever, ie doesn't even light up an area) i would make it pretty cheap... like 25 gold. or you could put some kind of gemstone there too. in fact, you could rule that such a gemstone previously existed in the lion shield, and the fabricate simply moves them to the appropriate place if you want =P |
| Seeker9505-23-05, 09:07 PM | I would let a wish or even limited wish accomplish it too, although this is somewhat less exciting than what tarkin suggested. Perhaps a crafter with both limited wish and craft magical arms & armor could accomplish this, for a small fee, of course. This could even be an adventure in the making. Perhaps the transformation requires the blood of a chimera. :D |
