Charm Animal Duration? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I have recently started playing DnD 3.5 and I have a question about one of the spells in the PHB. The spell is "Charm Animal" which says that it is like "Charm Person." It does not list a spell duration for Charm Animal, but under Charm Person the duration is 1 hour/level. It seems pretty straight forward to me that the duration for Charm Animal is also 1 hour/level. However, another player in our group says that since it does not list a duration, the spell is permanent. He argues that Charm Monster has a duration of 1 day/level and that it also says it is the same as Charm Person. He argues that it would be much more difficult to Charm a Monster than an Animal and so we should expect a longer duration for Charm Animal. This does not seem right - Charm Monster is a higher level spell so I'd expect it to have a longer duration. Can anyone give me a definitive answer to this question?

It is not permanent. If he wants a permanent animal friend, he can choose one as his animal companion.

10-30-03, 01:36 PM I would say that since they are the same level they have the same duration, 1 hour per level.

10-30-03, 02:42 PM Your first explanation is correct. Stating its's LIKE another spell EXCEPT where noted. Don't see a change in duration? There is no change. See a change? THere is a change. Its very straight forward.
