The question came up tonight during our game, and we were debating whether or not it would be possible to charm an intelligent sword. Why or why not? And would it be charm person or charm monster? We figured that the item is intelligent, it has an ego, and can think and speak for itself, so why couldn't it be charmed by a BBEG to be friendly and not attack him? |

| Lord Psynister05-28-04, 01:03 AM | I would say no, because it's neither a person or a monster. If I had to choose between one of the two, then I'd take monster over person. I wouldn't allow it in my games though. |
| velocityhead05-28-04, 01:10 AM | Right, that was what we were stuck on, because neither of the spells really covers this base. But other than that, we couldn't think of why it wouldn't be possible.... |

Magically imbued with sentience, these items think and feel the same way characters do and should be treated as NPCs. Intelligent items have extra abilities and sometimes extraordinary powers and special purposes. Only permanent magic items (as opposed to single-use items or those with charges) can be intelligent. (This means that potions, scrolls, and wands, among other items, are never intelligent.) In general, less than 1% of magic items have intelligence. Intelligent items can actually be considered creatures because they have Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores. Treat them as constructs. Intelligent items often have the ability to illuminate their surroundings at will (as magic weapons do); many cannot see otherwise. Unlike most magic items, intelligent items can activate their own powers without waiting for a command word from their owner. Intelligent items act during their owner’s turn in the initiative order. Charm Monster would work just fine on it.... except that Constructs are immune to all mind-affecting effects, including charms. If it wasn't for that, you'd be good to go. |
