How much does a victim of a mind-effecting spell remember afterwards?

Imagine this scenario. A city guard is demanding a bribe from the adventurers. Someone casts Suggestion on the guard and suggests that the party has already paid the bribe. The guard walks away happy, the party walks away happy. Time passes and the suggestion wears off. Does the guard go "hey! they cast a spell on me!" and summon the watch to have the adventurers arrested? Does he simply think that the suggestion was valid and continues to think it until somehow proven otherwise?

Similarly, imagine if the guard was hit with Charm Person. For the duration of the spell, he thinks the caster is his friend and lets him go without the bribe. When the spell wears off, does he think "Hey!" and call the guards, or does he think "Hmm, what did I ever see in him, he's not my friend". Or perhaps he remains the casters friend (though of a normal sort) assuming the caster doesn't do anything to ruin the friendship?

Obviously, I'm not talking about elf-orc friendships or dungeon use. I just mean about what happens when using these spells in various urban environments on people who are difficult, but not necessarily the opposition.

They retain their full memory of what they did, but because they failed their save they do not know it was due to magick.

However, intelligent people might figure that out. "Why did I let those peolpe in? I don't remember seeing them before????"
