What ways can you cheaply and permanently ward/protect an area(home/room/whatever).

In order of cost:
Buy a lock. (one time fee)
Buy a dog. (daily maintenance costs)
Hire a watchman.

Once you get into magical methods, you're probably talking about a permanent alarm spell. It must be at CL9 and costs 500 xp. You're talking about 2500gp for the xp alone, if you must pay someone else to cast it.

permanent guards and wards would be one thing that comes to mind.

its not cheap but: 48 lyres of building, strum on every half hour and your stronghold i s immune to damage and disintigrates, etc.

buy the strong hold builder's guidbook.

give your site (i'll assume a stronghold) flight. alot of low level enemies and armies would haveone hell of a time trying to siege you when you just up and fly away on them.

be creative :P

Considering Alarm is a 1st level spell and Permanency is a 5th level spell it is probably cheaper to make an alarm device wondrous item and hide it in your room.

'Course Ironically that would be the sort of thing I'd steal.

Are you warding a room with protectors or seeking to keep an empty area to yourself?

Trying to ward a building thats located over an important site.(no flying)

The building is there to protect access to the site so, its got to be real(no extra-dimensional space).

Theres little money to burn on this.

What would you bother with a 5th level Permanency spell, when good 'ol Glyph of Warding will do just fine?

It's only 3rd level, and doesn't have an XP cost. It does have an expensive material component (200gp diamond dust), but that's not exorbitant. You can choose the Blast variant f you just want to do some damage (and alert any mundane guards nearby), or attach any spell of 3rd level or less that you want to it.

The possibilities are limited only by the number of 3rd level spells out there, and your imagination. I particuarly like Glyph-triggered Summoning spells. . . and don't forget sucessions of Glyph-warded doors, etc. that successively wear down intruders (i.e., hit them with ability damage spells first, followed by Summoned monsters, etc.)

Forbiddance costs 1,500 gp and really helps seal an area.

Ghost Sound does not reproduce understandable speech thus no command words IRC. read the spell.

If you then suggest Magic Mouth think again as in the spell description they specify It can't say command words. How ever you can Perm it and have it say Halt who gos there!? and so on for everyone who walks by an area to alert guards.
DMing I had a Manikin dressed as the bbeg with a hood down in a dark room set to "Monologue" and get the good guys to dump attacks and spells on it :evillaugh . Distract attacks and soak up the enemy spells it is a great trick.

Phb2 or Complet Mage have 2 lvl Alarm that works detecting on all planes covergent to the material plane.

What level of spells do you have available? From what classes can you draw on? How much time do you have to work?
5 th lvl Mordikine's Private Sanctum lasts hours a lvl you can Extend that.

8th Dimentional Lock 20 ft. radius lasts days per lvl can be Extended pop one or more per room.
