Intended primarily for Druids and Rangers who have viper animal companions.

Heighten Nature’s Fang
Transmutation
Level: Drd 1, Rgr 1
Components: V, S, DF
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Touch
Target: One animal or vermin touched
Duration: 1 minute/level
Saving Throw: Fortitude negates (harmless)
Spell Resistance: Yes (harmless)

This spell makes it more difficult to resist the effects of an animal’s or vermin’s venom. The saving throw DC of the venom is increased by +2, as though the subject were granted a +4 enhancement bonus to constitution. The increase does not stack with enhancement bonuses to constitution, such as those granted by Bear’s endurance.

This spell only works on venom that is a normal racial feature of the creature. If the animal or vermin has the ability to produce venom as the result of a spell or magic item, Heighten Nature’s Fang has no effect on that venom’s saving throw DC.

Heighten Nature's Fang can be made permanent with a permanency spell.

Greater Heighten Nature’s Fang.
Transmutation
Level: Drd 3, Rgr 3
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Target: One animal or vermin
Duration: 1 hour/level.

As Heighten Nature’s Fang, but the DC of the subject’s poison increases by + 1 + 1/four caster levels. (+3 at 8th level, +4 at 12th, +5 at 16th, Maximum +6 at 20th)

Greater Heighten Nature's Fang can be made permanent with a permanency spell.

So first, I need a better name for these spells.

Second, how’s the balance? This spell is based Magic Fang and Greater Magic Fang, and on the effect that Bear’s Endurance has venom save DC’s. If a second level spell can increase the save DC of venom, add hit points, and increase Fort saves, then I thought it would be reasonable for a first level spell to do a subset of that.

Also, I was thinking of adding a third option to Greater Magic Fang. +1 to attack and damage for a single attack, and +2 to venom DC for that attack.

I like them as written. Balanced!

I would not add any attack options. The poison for an animal/vermin is a natural part of their attack. It doesn't need any more help than the spells are currently providing.

Nature's Venom (instead of Fang)
Toxic Avenger!!! (Sorry... had to be said. :P)

Thanks.

Also, I was thinking of adding a third option to Greater Magic Fang. +1 to attack and damage for a single attack, and +2 to venom DC for that attack.

It may have been unclear in context, but I was actually talking about the PHB spell Greater Magic Fang, not my own. Greater Magic Fang has two options; Give a single natural weapon a bonus of +1 to +5, depending on caster level, or give every natural weapon of a creature a +1 bonus. I was thinking of adding a third option as described above.

It sounds like you objected to adding an attack bonus to Greater Heighten Nature's Fang, which I totally agree with.

Names... How about
Long Fang and Longer Fang
Deep Bite and Deeper Bite
Improve Poison and Perfect Poison

I wonder if there's room for spells that increase the damage that the poison does on a failed save?

1. Yes, it was the addition of to hit bonuses to your proposed spell that I objected to. Your explanation dispelled my confusion. I have no opinion on the adjustment to Magic Fang.

2. Regarding names, I would avoid the reference to "fang" so as to avoid confusion with the magic fang spells. How about: heighten venom, so there is no doubt what the spell affects?

3. How about this type of progression for spells affecting natural venoms:

Lvl1: DC+2 Heighten Venom
Lvl3: Scaled version Heighten Venom, Greater
Lvl4: As HV, with Maximized variable poison damage effects.
Lvl6: As GHV with Maximized variable poison damage effects.

You know, Heighten Venom is probably the best name, as it describes exactly what the spell does. My only hesitation is that Dragon 304 has a spell of the same name.

3.0 compatible, Drd6, Sor/Wiz 7, 1 round/level, smaller increases in DC than my Greater Heighten Venom. Of course it also works on any venomous creature, not just animals and vermin. It's intended for monster PC's and NPC's, like from the Savage Species book, who probably have other ways to increase the save DC's on their poisons. Still, it seems underpowered in my opinion.

:bump:

Just want to see if there are any other points of view out there.
