| AvaronGansdell08-16-05, 11:18 PM | I currently have a character in the worlds largest dungeon. a evoker it looks like getting access to a spellbook will be rare so every spell I choose is vital. I recently leveled up to 4th level and get to choose two more 2ed level spells but as a evoker one of them has to be a evocation spell I already have scorching ray. what is a good 2ed level evocation spell for a wizard who may never have any spells besides the two free at each level? how about just great all around? Thanks |
| smrtgmp08-17-05, 12:43 AM | First things first, what are your prohibited schools? The WLD is pretty ruff on wizards; I hope your DM gave you fair warning about that. |
| Dragonsblood08-17-05, 12:57 AM | It would also be useful to know the classes of your party. |
| Bloodtide_the_Red08-17-05, 01:03 AM | -Shatter may be the best 2nd level Evocation spell, in Core anyway. The ability to destroy and object has so many uses(there is at least a thread or two around here). It can help get in locked doors, treasure chests or break a link in a chain. It can even be of use in combat, to destroy opponents equipment. -Flaming Sphere has it use. For 4 rounds you get a ball of fire that can burn folks. They do get a save, but it's auto hit, and 2d6 damage is fair. And it can set stuff on fire. For nonevocations- -Alter Self has plenty of uses, as you can turn into 'anything'(almost). I creature with a nice natural armor class, for example, can help. -Summon monster 2, not realy so much to fight, but for all the other tricks that can be done. And there are some nice combat tricks too..a feindish wolf tripping folks, for example. BT |
| smrtgmp08-17-05, 01:07 AM | IIRC you cant use summon spells in the WLD. Or if you can, the mosters stick around after the spell wears off but you no longer have control over them. |
| AvaronGansdell08-17-05, 02:43 PM | well it was my owen dumb fault if I had been thinking right I would be a sorcerer..but no I wasent thinking and played a wizard. my character is a LG human wizard, headed into celestial mystic prestige class. specilizedin evocation barred illusion and enchantment. my current feats are arcane deciple (healing), servant of the heavens, sacred vow. and at 5th I will probebly take purify spell. my known spells are all 0th not barred from. 1st cure light wounds, mage armor, protection from evil, ray of enfeeblement, buring hands, identify, light of lunia, lesser acid orb, 2ed cure moderat wounds, scorching ray. my party consists of CG human fighter2/warlock3 (two handed fighter with hidous blow and devils sight scary) LG elven paladin 4 going into peious templar then into fist of raziel. NG human cleric 4 going into raident servant of pelor NG gnome bard 4 CG wizper gnome rogue 4 psion 1 going into elocator LN human monk 5 going into drunken master thanks for the help |
| Ossyrian Ush'Bel08-17-05, 05:04 PM | Fox's Cunning is great for an instant +2 to the DC's of your spells. If you are doing the WLD you will need all of your spells to hit and the +2 to the DC helps quite a bit. |
| tarkin08-17-05, 05:04 PM | (wrong information removed) Good 2nd level spells, core: evocation: Scorching Ray Continual flame (you will be needing light at some time...) Web (trap them, catch them) Alter Self (flight, swim, woho!) False Life (hitpoitns woho!) Mirror Image (Defense against any to hit spells, even ranged touch attacks) ------ Also, if you find a scroll, you can scribe it into your spellbook, if you have the ink and time. |
| AvaronGansdell08-17-05, 05:56 PM | in WLD you have very little if any access to special materials and nothing resembling a safe working enviorment. and takeing a whole day out to scribe a spell is basicly out of the quest. also I have a cleric in the group who can do continual flame and other crossover rarely used spells. note also that spells with expensive material componets are very tough to use. basicly except for the two free spells each level my best chance at getting new spells is finding enemy spellbooks and then makeing the spellcraft cheaks to master them. |
| Puca08-17-05, 07:18 PM | Id go mirror image. |
| AvaronGansdell08-17-05, 08:20 PM | I am more interested in good evocation spells that I am required to choose each level. Plus please note that illusion and enchantment are barred to me so mirror image is impossible |
| smrtgmp08-17-05, 09:07 PM | Toothed Tentacles from Lost Empires of Faerun is a great 2nd level spell. It has a duration of concentration, but it lasts 1 round/level and has three attacks, each of which does 2d6 points of damage. IIRC it uses your CL as its BAB and you get to add your int mod to the attack rolls. A possible 6d6 per round is pretty damn good for a 2nd level spell. In many combats at your level its the only spell you'll have to cast. Why are you required to take one evocation spell at each level? I cant find anything in the rules that requires this. Is this a house rule, or am I just blind? |
| moto08-17-05, 09:12 PM | Actually, YOU don't have to take an evocation spell every level, it's just that the extra spell slot you get from being an evocer MUST be used with a evocation spell. |
| AvaronGansdell08-17-05, 09:16 PM | unfortunatly the game is set in grayhawk and the DM will not allow any campagin specific materials such as realms books, ebberon, dragonlance exc. or third party books. and on page 179 of the PHB first paragraph last line "if she has chosen to specilize in a school of magic, one of the two free spells must be from her speciality school." ya its obious wizards Hates wizards..hates arcane spellcasters all together but really hates wizards. |
| smrtgmp08-18-05, 01:15 AM | In a normal campaign, its really a non-issue, as you have access to other spells. And other than the cleric and the druid, the wizard is one of the most powerful classes in the game, IMO. IMO the WLD is kind of lame, as its nothing but a massive dungeon crawl (big suprise, eh?) that is rather sparse in the role playing department. I like to kill stuff as much as the next guy, but I need some breaks here and there. |
| AvaronGansdell08-19-05, 10:48 AM | ya its a tought adventure for several classes, wizard, druid, ranger, most anyone who needs down time or accesss to special situatuions like woods. |
| Merestil Haye08-19-05, 11:36 AM | (snip) note also that spells with expensive material componets are very tough to use. basicly except for the two free spells each level my best chance at getting new spells is finding enemy spellbooks and then makeing the spellcraft cheaks to master them.Unfortunately you still have to scribe those spells into your spellbook in order to use them unless your DM is applying a houserule. (This might not be a bad houserule for WLD). Wizards in WLD need the Collegiate Wizard feat (CArc p 181) or downtime to survive. As for the spells allowed; have a look through BoED, since I suspect you have access to that supplement given your plans. |

Look at spellcraft skill, you can use it to prepare a spell from a burrowed spellbook at 15+level of the spell. If he's maxing its spellcraft skill, it won't be much of a problem. Nayk |
| tarkin08-19-05, 01:47 PM | Also, there is a Sage ruling that if you use a borrowed spellbook often enough, it becomes considered your own and you don't need roll the spellcraft check. In anything but a Strict Game, I would definitely use that rule. |
| AvaronGansdell08-21-05, 01:12 PM | there is also a rule in compleat arcane taht allows the mastery of a forgin spellbook. but the problem now is which spell to choose for my lv 4 evocation spell. |
| Epic Commoner08-21-05, 04:10 PM | What book is the World's Largest Dungeon in? Is it an official Wizards product? Also, why did you bother to take a feat to get healing spells for a wizard when you have a cleric and a paladin? |
| Gnarl08-21-05, 05:13 PM | World's largest dungeon! I need to buy that thing :D Is it a 250 page dungeon crawl? Back to your second level, well you already took the realy good one: scorching ray. Maybe darkness? It can help a little. Otherwise, pick a third level one. Now, while we're at it. If you need some time to rest and do your magic stuff like scribing scrolls or anything. Did you consider taking the spell Rope Trick? It's only 4 hours per casting at your level but it should increase fairly quick, with multiple castings of the spell, you have all the time in the world to do your stuff. You might even get your dm to let you have an item creation lab in one of your bags of holding :D |
| AvaronGansdell08-22-05, 02:06 AM | the worlds largest is closer to 500 pages it takes characters from 1st to 20th level and you will end up fighting everything in the SRD. your basicly stuck in the dungeon with no way out and no access to outside resorces I took the healing spells because you can never have too much healing and a cleric can always use a back up healer a paladin dosent really count they never get much healing especialy if like our paladiin they multiclass. also it adds all those spells to my spells known list allowing me to activate magic items useing them such as a wand of cure light wounds |
| smrtgmp08-22-05, 05:38 PM | World's largest dungeon! I need to buy that thing :D Is it a 250 page dungeon crawl?Save you're money. Its one of the few D&D books I regret purchasing. You could get 3 other D&D books for the same price. The only thing I like about it are the umpteen pages of dungeon maps that can be easily integrated into any campaign. |
