I was just playing some classic Baldur's Gate 1 recently. I haven't had any experience with 1st or 2nd edition PnP, so I was looking for some help.
What happened to Chromatic Orb? Was it too overpowered and was therefore removed? I sort of like the scaling abilities, and it made a nice change from Magic Missiles. Is it available anywhere for 3.x?
Alrighty, any help with this would be great, thanks.

No remake that i know of. It is too powerful as a 1st level spell. If you are 12th level you got a 1st level spell that does what a 7th level spell does. Using 3rd edition you could modify it with feats to make it better than the 7th level equivalent.

It was an awesome spell. May it R.I.P.

I think that wizards have rescued it recently in the PG to Faerun:

This name is prismatic eye.

Imagine CO in 3rd ed. A 1st level spell that can kill/paralyse/turn to stone as a touch attack.

I have not to imagine it...

was adapted to the pseudo 3e rules game Icewind Dale 2.

Was a reflex save one and the efects went up to stun for 12 rounds at level 9.

Obviously was better that hold person in almost every way.

Actually, that spell was also in Magic of Faerūn. It creates a floating orb that can fire energy rays and absorb energy damage. IIRC, it's level 6.

That is a totally different spell. Really cool, possibly overpowered spell though in it's own right.

I remember a thread that hashed out a 3.0 version on the boards a long while back. Here's the version I saved (don't remember who wrote/contributed to it, or if it was what the participants finally agreed on, if anything):

Chromatic Orb
Transmutation
Level: Sor/Wiz 1
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 100'
Target: One creature or object
Duration: 1d3 rounds
Saving Throw: Save negates (see text)
Spell Resistance: Yes

This spell produces a 4-inch-diameter colored sphere which can be hurled at an opponent to inflict various effects. Hurling the orb is a ranged touch attack and has a range increment of 20 feet. Casting and hurling the orb constitutes a single standard action that counts both as spell casting and as making a ranged attack. If the orb misses its target, it dissipates without effect.

Your level determines which orbs you can create. The descriptions for the various types of orbs is listed below. You can create a single orb of any color listed for your level or lower. For example, a 3rd level wizard can create an orange, red, or white orb. If the target succeeds in the apropriate save the special effect is ignored, but the initial damage allows no save. If the save is failed, the victim (only) suffers the listed effect for 1d3 rounds. While affected, victims (or objects) are surrounded by a pale glowing aura of the same color as the sphere.

* 1st Level Pearly white: initial damage 1d4 (force), special effect - WILL save or Light affects a random object on the subject.

* 2nd Level Ruby red: initial damage 1d6 (heat), special effect - WILL save or Heat metal affects a random object on the subject.

* 3rd Level Flame orange: initial damage 1d8 (fire), special effect - REF save or subject's hair/clothes/fur catch fier (1d6 damage/round).

* 4th Level Amber yellow: initial damage 1d10 (force), special effect - WILL save or temporarily Blind.

* 5th Level Emerald green: initial damage 1d12 (acid), special effect - FORT save or affected as by a Stinking Cloud.

* 6th Level Turquoise: initial damage 2d4 (force), special effect - Will save or Held.

* 7th Level Blue: initial damage 2d6 (cold), special effect - FORT save or paralyzed.

* 8th Level Violet: initial damage 2d8 (force), special effect, - WILL save or Confused.

* 9th Level Black: initial damage 2d10 (negative energy), special effect - FORT save or gain 1d4 negative levels.

Material Component: A gem of appropriate color for the desired effect worth at least 5gp per level required to create the orb, or a diamond of at least 50 gp.

That is still overpowered for a first lvl spell...but the saving grace is the monetary/gem cost of it...apart from that though...why bother having most other 1st lvl...they just dont stack up at higher lvls...where this so!!!!! does!~!!@!!!!

I think there is a reason it was removed...but this is a good rendition...but I dont think it is a 1st lvl spell...maybe 2nd

Here's my take, heavily based on Prismatic Spray:

Chromatic Orb
Evocation
Level: Sor/Wiz 1
Components: V,S
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Effect: Ray
Duration: See text
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: Yes

This spell causes a shimmering, multicolored orb nearly a foot across to shoot out from your hand. The ball flashes with seven colors, each with a different effect. You must succeed on a range touch attack with the ray to affect the target. A creature struck by the orb is subject to one of the following effects, determined randomly.

Color
1d8 of Ball Effect

1 Red 2 points fire damage

2 Orange 4 points acid damage

3 Yellow 8 points electricity damage

4 Green Nauseated for 1 round

5 Blue Held for 1 round

6 Indigo Confused for 1 round,
as confusion spell
7 Violet Stunned for 1 round

8 White Blind for 1 round

Great, I will try both of those variants out. It may indeed be overpowered for a first level spell, but I am SO sick of Magic Missile, hehe. Thanks for the help everyone.

Im not sure if the 2nd edition one has a material component but I saw a remake posted (by searching on chromatic orb) that requires a 50 gold gem to use.

When a first level spell costs 50 gold per casting...its not to powerful.

50 gp to kill someone on a failed fort save or turn them to stone. 1st level spell.

Actually the material component was kinda a pain. It was a gem of the apprpriate color or any diamond. Had to be worth atleast 50gp. Sooo if yer DM didn't like the spell he just made iamonds rare and you carry around a bunch of gems of different colors.

A smart DM simply wouldn't let you take the spell in the first place, rather than punish you for trying to use the broken effects after the fact.
