Quick question.

Does anybody know where the Chromatic orb spell is shown in 3.5?

I have most of the books but I can't seem to find it. Has it been removed?

Thanks for the help :-)

I think they may have replaced it with Color Spray.

Why was it cut? Was it overpowered or what. I know I used it alot i the old game and loved it since it was useable along way.
Gues I'll just have to take magic missle instead...

Thanks for the quick response. I really apriciate it.

Chromatic Orb was an Illusionist only spell added in 1st edition in Unearthed Arcana. At that time arcane spell casters were basically either Illusionists or Magic Users, Chromatic Orb was an offensive spell given to them and given the offensive spells the were competing with that MUs had, it really wasnt overpowered, but it definitely was the Magic Missile of the Illusionist list. The spell made it to 2nd Edition as well, though it was more overpowered there because of various game dynamics. Once 3rd edition game out, it was abandoned because of max damage per level spell and Illusionists being just one of 8 types of specialized mages.

it was abandonded because once you got over a certain level it became a spell that could be described as die or die... after caster level 12, any creature that you hit with it saved or died, and if they made thier save they were paralysed (which is as good as dead, since they will likely just be coupde graced the next round). there were no HD limitations or anything on the spell, making a 1st level spell essentialy better in most cases then a 5th spell (Slay living) and arguably a 7th level spell (Finger of Death).
