I was browsing some forums when I came across this strange word. Who or what are chronomancers and what do they do?

The prefix Chrono often refers to time.

Hence a Chronomancer would be a mage that controls and/or manipulates time.

(spells a chronomancer might have: haste, slow, teleport, dimensional door, longstrider/expedious retreat, time stop, temporal stasis, hold monster/person..etc)

(the same way a necromancer=>necromancy ( magic of death/undeath

pyromancer-> mage that controls fire

etc)

Hello :)

For specifics, in 2nd edition there was a supplemental accessory regarding chronomancers. In 3E, there is a book made by another company, guide to chronomancy or something.

Essentially, it works like a normal specialist wizard, except they have several stranger benefits (that are cool, but don't always fit into most campaigns).

If you like, I made a spreadsheet for a friend who was contemplating using one (and I said ok). The spreadsheet has all spells from all sources for 1E, 2E, Tome of Magic, 3E, etc that can be used by a chronomancer and the level of the spell. They have quite a good selection of Chronomancer school spells.

I forgot what their opposition school is in 2E but in 3E i believe you choose, so it's not as big a deal. Actually, I think in 2E, they have 2 or 3 opposition schools.

If the DM is used to using them, they can be fun.

If you want the spreadsheet, let me know.

Chronomancy really got shafted in 3E. For example, look at the epic spell time duplicate. You pull yourself out of the future one round ahead, you both act, you both dissapear for one round, and then you're back to normal. And it specifically states that that's about as powerful a chronomantic effect as space-time can support. So you're looking at haste, slow, time stop, temporal stasis, pass the years and widdershins from R&R, and temporal venom from CBoEM. If your DM is feeling generous, he may let you take psionic powers as arcane spells, too, which will give your 4 or 5 more good ones. If you also decide to focus on teleportation, your luck is a little better, as there are a lot of those spells. CBoEM is also very good there, as are psionics.

Beyond that, there's very little you can do. Create custom spells, I suppose. For example, you could create better verions of haste and slow (a level 6 haste might grant an extra MEA, and a level 9 version might be like 3.0 haste). Slow might give people only a % chance to act in a round, or stretch their actions so that a SA takes a full-round to complete, a full-round action takes 1 complete round, provoking AoO, etc.

I created my spreadsheet so that a chrono. player would have a list of all their special spells (some are missing from newer books as I created this some time ago). As long as the DM has access to all these sources, he/she can convert all the spells to any edition and thus give the player a large selection :)

I think they shafted chronomancy in 3e because they wanted to avoid paradoxes.

I don't think I'm interested in the spreadsheet. I'm concidering actually buying the book. For among other (mostly legal) reasons I'd like having a rare book such as chronomancer.

They shafted it because Chronomancy is *really really really* annoying.

There is nothing worse than having to worry about things that have happened suddenly not having happened and other crap like that, especially in combat.

My spreadsheet is just the names of the spells and their sources.

Not descriptions...I expect you to buy the books :P hehe
