| robitusinz02-17-05, 11:45 AM | Cid's Parchment Retrieval Conjuration (Summoning) Level: Sor/Wiz 1 Components: V, S Casting Time: 10 minutes Range: See text Target: One parchment, paper, scroll or bound book baring the caster's Arcane Mark. Duration: Instant Saving Throw: Special Spell Resistance: No Upon completion of the 10 minute ritual of gestures and chants which describe the content of the item in question, the targetted item appears before the caster, regardless of distance, though the book must have been on the same plane of existence as the caster. If the item was being held at the time, the object's wielder makes a Reflex save to keep the book. Please give any feedback, and consider that this spell only allows for the retrieval of a book, or a sheet of paper. It's not a "get me any item" spell. It also requires the item in question to have been Arcane Marked (so there's no theft involved...typically, if you can Mark it, you can just steal it, so no need for this spell). The background story behind this spell is that my character, Cid, is a budding young Wizard with the idea of creating a line of spellbooks that would be easy to read and copy. He would rent out these books, and use this spell to retrieve them afterwards. Thus, Cid will be our campaign world's first writer of "Spellbooks for Dummies", and the first "Blockbuster". (Think, "Cid's Complete Book of Evocation", "Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Necromancy, but Were Afraid to Ask", "Cid's Spells for Household Use", "Magic: It Makes Life Easier", etc. etc. etc.) For this reason, I'd like this spell to be low level, no more than 1st. I'd like to hear any feedback and concerns. The few abuse issues I've come up with so far aren't really anything you wouldn't be able to do without this spell (such as the theft I mentioned earlier), but I know there are very creative people on these boards. :D |

To make this something other than a "get me my spellbook" spell, make the book element be non-magical. You could still summon your spellbook, as long as it is unprotected by any other magical elements (like fire trap, explosive runes, glyph of XYZ, etc). Then make a higher level version that can snag a spellbook with all its magical protections. |
| psionichamster02-17-05, 01:13 PM | if it's a matter of spellbooks, i think a monetary component may be in order...the time factor is good, you don't really want this to be a tactical spell, now do you... no marking up scrolls (like contingent scrolls, finger of death type stuff, get of jail-free abilities, etc...) and summoning them at a moment's notice... although this would be a VERY handy infiltration tool shrink item and turn things like all your gear, the fighter (if that allowed, don't know for sure), constructs and the like into cloth versions of themselves stick the now-bookmark-looking items in your combat spellbook (since this char would most likely have spec. ones for each type of memorization day) or your general purpose one get "captured" and thrown in prison (make sure it's not a place with summary execution *cough* paladins *cough*) summon spellbook, with components, money, people, a dire lion effigy, whatever you'd like inside as a cloth item and now you're inside the castle, armed and ready to go a killin' (or lootin' protectin' burnin' savin' whatever) other than that, looks pretty good to me nice signature spell, too...and you could have "Weave-Buster" or "Net-Boox" or something like that up in relative short order as a matter of safety, i'd also perhaps write up a self-destruct/fire trap kinda deally...just in case also, i personally wouldn't write such spells as fireball, dispel magic, true strike and other staple combat spells in them. no use in arming potential enemies even further, is there? utility spells, divinations, enchantments, all these would prob be HUGE sellers...i can see continual flame making quite an impact on an aristocratic population, or darkvision hell, even prestidigitation or dancing lights, silent image, ghost sound would be great, low-cost entertainment spells! nice work namaste, the hamster |

The primary goal for this spell is to transfer mundane books (Cid's not going to trap books he's planning on renting out), so it could work out to limit it to non-enchanted items. |

I'd like to avoid a monetary component if at all possible. In fact, I want to avoid any material component whatsoever. This is a spell to be used for making money. :D Having an extra overhead cost would defeat the purpose (Cid would have worked harder on researching the spell to NOT have a material component.) And you're absolutely correct in that this is nowhere near a tactical spell. Barring some fluke situation, this spell will be cast during down-time. In regards to calling up scrolls instantly, that's not the goal of this spell, hence the 10 minute casting time. However, there's the possibility that it can be used to retrieve a particular scroll that got left at home while in a dungeon. Still, if a character does plan to use this spell for that, it would make no sense...if you remember to memorize the 10 minute spell to retrieve scrolls you forgot, why not just pack the scrolls to begin with? The lack of any real power or versatility in this spell I think limits it to being used solely during downtime and for flavor/RP purposes. LOL, the shrink item idea is creative. While it does illustrate an abusive use of this spell, I'm positive that my DM would never allow that situation to happen, regardless of the Parchment Retrieval spell. :D In fact, you wouldn't even need Parchment Retrieval in the situation you describe...just roll all that stuff up in a scroll and stick it in your back pocket and go wherever you need to go. Barring someone taking off your pants, you should be all set to whip out your spellbomb and surprise whoever you intend to use all that one. That's actually what I meant when I mentioned that I had found much simpler ways of doing the things that could be construed as abusive uses of this spell. If you're in jail and want your spellbook, going through a 10 minute ritual is probably going to bring too much attention to be worthwhile. Bribery might work better in that specific situation, or maybe a quick Mage Hand to grab keys off a sleeping guard, etc. This spell would be a total last resort, and one that probably wouldn't even work. ("Hey you! No casting spells in jail!" *THWONK*) Any other comments would be welcome, though I'm happy with the feedback I've gotten so far. |
