The circlet of harmony is a delicate ring of crystal, usually tinged purple and pink. The circlets powers act to unify the wearer's mind and concentration, allowing him or her to bring his full powers to bear when casting spells (or manifesting psionic powers).
Game Mechanics: When the wearer casts a spell or manifests a power, his caster level is equivalent to his full character level. However, the circlet cannot more than double the normal caster level in this way, nor do its powers stack with similiar combinations (such as the class ability of the True Necromancer).

For example: a Wizard 5 / Fighter 1 would cast spells at caster level 6. A Wizard 1 / Fighter 5 would cast spells at caster level 2.

Prerequisites: Craft Wondrous Item *and* Craft Universal Item; Limited Wish or Fusion, caster level 13. Market Price: 18000

[If psionics are not used in the campaign world then replace Craft Universal Item with Craft Rod (for the non-spell-like effect).]

Pricing set as a continuous 3rd level effect (in essence, the reverse of the psionic power Schism, which lets you make an additional mental action each round).

This is accomplishing *at least* the effect of an orange ioun stone. As such, it should cost *at least* as much as the orange ioun stone (30K).

Since it actually allows no less than 1 caster level (for any character capable of using it in the first place), I would also have each ring limited to how high it can go, for each 30K after that.

Example:
Standard: (limit to +2 CL) = 30K
Enhanced: (limit to +4 CL) = 60K
Optimized: (limit to +6 CL) = 90K
Maximized: (limit to +10 CL) = 150K

Well, holy crap. I didn't even know about the Orange Ioun Stone.

*But* the orange Ioun Stone's price is doubled because it is a "slotless" item. The Circlet uses up the "Helm" slot. So drop the price to 15k for initial comparisons.... Also, a Wiz 1 can use an orange Ioun Stone to get +1 CL, but a Circlet of Harmony wil do nothing for said wizard.

The multiclass spellcaster is already getting the "shaft" from not having the additional spells and spell levels, so I'm thinking the restrictions don't need to be as tough for this *more* expensive item.

Let's try this:
Circlet of Harmony, Minor (as written, but a maximum of +3): 18k
Circlet of Harmony (as written, but a maximum of +6): 54k
Circlet of Harmony, Greater (as written, but a maximum of +10): 135k
Circlet of Harmony, Epic (as written, no limit): 1.25M

Remember that we're talking about a majorly multiclassed spellcaster here... to fully use a Circlet of Harmony (normal), you'd have to be a Spellcaster 6 / Nonspellcaster 6....

Good points and good application. I like it. The only other element I would add (without changing the price) is to have three different types:

Arcane
Divine
Psionic

One size does not fit all!

I don't know... that seems to make it susbstantially less useful. As you pointed out the Orange Ioun Stone will give 1 caster level... to everything. If you are a Mage 3, Cleric 5, Psion 1, the Orange Ioun Stone will give you +1 caster level to both mage and cleric (and to psion, if using transparency).

You're suggesting that if this character were wearing a Circlet of Harmony, that he would only benefit one class - and the device costs (as detailed previously) about the same....

Yes, that is exactly what I am suggesting.

The orange Ioun stone gives you +1 Caster Level. Period. End of description.

Your item grants a benefit to your caster level based on your multi-class level. All I am suggesting is that you make different items for different caster types.

It does not shaft anyone. You simply would not buy a psionic circlet if you were an arcane caster.
