How does it come that you don`t need to make a scry check on clairvoyance (3rd level), but with scrying (5th)?I´m talking 3rd ed. here.2 levels lower and even easier to discover something obvious but not seen...?

Though both deal with observation, these divinations are really quite different.

Clairvoyance, a level 3 spell, lets you pick a location within 400 + 40/lvl feet to observe. There's no save involved, but all you'll see is what's in that one location. You may or may not find something useful to observe there.

Scry, a level 4 spell (except Cleric), allows you to observe a specific individual at an indefinate range. Your target could be on the other side of the planet, and you could attempt to scry him. There are extra limitations on this power, namely a Will save and an expensive Focus component. (Sor/Wiz) If you succeed, you are presented with the immediate location of your target.

For more clarification: In 3rd edition clairvoyance has infinite range just like scrying but targets an area, and you need to know the area somehow. Scrying targets a creature, and you don't need to know where the creature is, and it follows the creature. In fact I'm pretty sure (I don't have my books on me right now) that clairvoyance works only on the same plane of existence but I'm 100% sure that scrying works accross planes.

You could for instance scry on the evil priest (not necessarily a good idea but hey) and see him performing his rituals to summon a dark god. Then you could use clairvoyance to scout around the temple to find an appropriate place to teleport into or locate the source of the unholy water fueling the ceremony.

Great spells all around (not the 3.5 version or course - but that goes without saying).
