Can they be made? Or not?

Is there any definitive statement or errata which states whether or not you can make potions of true strike?

Thanks.

Well, when I first read this, I thought, "Why couldn't you?" Upon investigation, however, I discovered that you CANNOT make a potion of true strike, because it has a range of Personal and you cannot make potions of spells with a Personal range.

True, such potions cannot be made; the reason is that spell with a Personal range are meant to be available only to the caster (and maybe his familiar), so, if you effectively allowed that same caster to grant their benefits to others, you would be breaking the essence of the spell (and unbalance the game).

Though you could make a Magic tattoo (Tattoo magic feat from Races of Faerun). It's balanced by costing 50gp*CL*Spell level as opposed to 25gp for potions AND it takes up a Magic item Slot on the body until used.

in general, btw, i don't think it's a good idea to take stuff out of faerun (that is, if you're gonna use faerun stuff, use it in faerun, or use everything from faerun). there is a tendency for stuff to be a little more powerful in Faerun, from what i've seen, so using only some of it will mae some parts of the game oddly balanced.

What about wands and scrolls? My UMD rogue has made good use of True Strike scrolls... was I right to be able to get those made?

Wands and scrolls should be fine. I'm not sure if it's explicitly written out but I rule that using a wand that causes a spell with a range of self to activate only targets the wand wielder.

That was always the way I thought of it, too... putting a spell on a wand doesn't change its description.

Yes that is the cost to create...

The material in FR is hardly anymore powerful than anything out of the Complete series, especially Arcane... That's just a common misconception.

riiii-iight... so spellfire and spellcasting prodigy are not hands-down better than standard stuff?

the spells aren't any better either, i'm sure. it's not like you can heal with arcane stuff... oh wait, yes it is... or that you can just get a contingency type spell that can hold multiple spells... oh wait... you can do that, too.

and it's just coincidence that archmage and incantrix happen to be FR stuff originally, and that when they ported over the archmage they beat it severely with a nerfstick so that it would be sane to allow it's use with normal rules?

i remember the day i saw a level 1 spell that either gave you proficiency in any one type of weapon (not a big cincern to me), OR gave you +10 to one skill and made you considered trained (including exclusive skills). which, in 3.0 (when it was written), is kinda like just handing out class features for free. i mean, UMD wasn't as big of a concern, but animal empathy? (3.0 version of the ranger and druid's class ability wild empathy)

and the fact that they have non-magical items that allow quickdraw of various objects.... that's not any different either. it's not like they just sold the equivalent of a feat for under 100 GP or anything.

nor is the fact that everyone gets bonus starting gear, including most likely one or more magical items.

There's also a lot of junk in FR that's worse than many core things. It goes both ways.

Spellfire isn't a feat that can just be taken willy-nilly. Like Leadership it's a DM call. A LOT of things were broke in 3.0, not just the archmage and incantatrix... 3.5 has taken care of many of the former editions problems, like spell power and other things that beef Save DC's.

What's wrong with the potion belt? Big whoop you get to draw one potion as a free action, it still provokes AoO's to drink it. Or is it the bandolier?

Starting gear is subject to class and Region/Race. A few potions or a magic wand of a 1st level spell are hardly overpowering.

The revised Spellcasting Prodigy feat is certainly no worse than some stuff that appears in the Complete books.

Polymorph (a core arcane spell) allows Arcane healing, too.

Wands and scrolls should be fine. I'm not sure if it's explicitly written out but I rule that using a wand that causes a spell with a range of self to activate only targets the wand wielder.Yep, in the case of a wand or scroll the activator is treated as the caster, with the exception that caster level and similar is set by the item. In the case of a potion, the activator is the target.
