one of the plot hooks in my campaign is that a spell has been stolen from a magical library.

The spell - custom for the campaign - transfers the soul of one person into the body of another. The spell will never fall into pc hands so i'm not planning on writing mechanics for it but i need to be able to give them more clues as to what kind of spell it is (the currently dont know anything about it)

The library was so trashed that it will take some time before the librarians can even say what spell was taken but they'll start narrowing down what kind of spell it was pretty soon (transfiguration, illusion, etc).

I've never understood categories of spells - what kind would it be?

Sounds like an interesting campaign! For future reference, spells that transfer, attack, shield, restore, or otherwise interact directly with life energies are almost always in the Necromancy school.
