Now, assuming a 12th level spell caster - How often can you attack? A) Can you hit twelve times on the round you cast the spell? Hit once on the spell casting round and use the remaining attacks on the next round? Do you wait one round ('cause you cast the spell) and then use all twelve attacks on the following round? B) Or do you cast the spell on one round and then use your attacks (2 per round at 12th level) each round until the spell is exhausted? Who can you attack? A) Can you attack any and all opponents within your melee range? Can they be attacked as many times as you have melee attacks for that round? B) You can only attack a single creature and all attacks must be used when casting the spell. What's an 'attack'? Can you hold your 'attack' and do other things with your ensorcelled hand, or are you committed to discharging the spell whenever you touch a creature? Chill Touch doesn't list a Duration (other than Instantaneous) so it seems that one could hold the spell in their hands indefinitely until they need to make a melee attack. I would rule it a separate atttack made at the casters attacks/round until the number of attacks was exhausted. The caster may not attack on the round that the spell is cast. I would also allow the spell to be held until a melee attack is made and that casually touching someone is not an attack. So, does this seem reasonable in light of the wide possible interpretation? |
| jaelis03-30-06, 10:05 PM | I play the spell as if it were written like this: Chill Touch Necromancy Level: Sor/Wiz 1 Components: V, S Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: Personal Target: You Duration: Until discharged, see below Saving Throw: see text Spell Resistance: Yes, see below This spell causes your hand to glow with blue energy that disrupts the life force of living creatures. It grants you the ability to make touch attacks that deal 1d6 points of negative energy damage. The touched creature also takes 1 point of Strength damage unless it makes a successful Fortitude saving throw. Spell resistance applies to these effects. You can use this melee touch once in the round you cast the spell, and continue to use it in subsequent rounds until you have made a total of 1 touch per level, whereupon the spell ends. The spell also ends immediately if you cast another spell. An undead creature you touch takes no ability or hit point damage, but it must make a successful Will saving throw or flee as if panicked for 1d4 rounds +1 round per caster level. |
| Seeker9503-31-06, 09:06 AM | The Casting Time is Instantaneous and you can make one attack per caster level.No. You can affect up to one creature touched, per caster level. Now, assuming a 12th level spell caster - How often can you attack? However often you can normally attack, determined by your BAB and any other modifiers (like haste or whirlwind attack) that may grant you additional attacks in a round. So the answer would be B: B) Or do you cast the spell on one round and then use your attacks (2 per round at 12th level) each round until the spell is exhausted?Who can you attack?Anyone you can touch. It is a touch attack. Hence the name chill touch1. What's an 'attack'? 2. Can you hold your 'attack' and do other things with your ensorcelled hand, or are you committed to discharging the spell whenever you touch a creature?1. This is covered fairly extensively in the Combat section of the PHB. 2. "Holding a charge" and "holding the attack" will work for this spell the same way they work for all spells. Touching anyone releases the energy. Even casually. If you find yourself in need of grabbing a friend to save them from falling, it is probably better to "discharge" the spell. |
| Broken vacuum04-01-06, 04:21 AM | Just a note: You can always make an attack as part of casting a touch spell and the attack can can be done either during the casting action or after a move that is done in the same round after the casting. A pretty standard way of casting touch spells is cast-move-touch. In this case it means that you can make one touch attack in the round you cast the spell and then make as many touch attacks as you can normal attacks in the following rounds. |
