10-28-05, 11:40 PM My wife is trying to boost her Defensive Casting skill. Are there any SPECIFIC magic items that increase this? I realize you could buy a Ring + 5 concentration or Constitution + x... but is there a cloak or amulet that is listed in one of the books... Complete Arcana (I dont own it...yet) for example ?

CLERIC @ 3rd level w/ 4,500gp's
<edit> Goal is to be a Combat Medic (Heroes of Battle) @ 6th level
Combat Medic (2) allows you to add your class level to your Defensive Casting Skill check.

Ranks (starts with 8 Ranks w/ INT of 10)

Level 1: Concentration 3, Heal 4, Religion 1
Level 2: Concentration 4, Heal 5, Religion 1
Level 3: Concentration 5, Heal 6, Religion 1

Combat Casting gives her +4
Constitution 14 gives her +2

5 Ranks + 4 CC + 2 Con = +11 Concentration Skill Check

alternatively, you could get 1 or more power points, and expend psionic focus to take 15 on a concentration check iirc. (might be only take 10 in combat, not sure).

10-29-05, 04:00 AM Ok, so what you want to increase is Concentration (a skill).
So your options are:
1. Purchase a skill enhancing item.
2. She makes it with Craft Wondrous Item.

Myself, I recommend either the belt or shirt slot, since both those are reserved for physical improvement. Since she’s a cleric who would like to wear plate, I recommend the belt slot. Concentration based skills are related to physical capabilities which is exactly what this item helps.

To make an item that grants skill it costs Bonus squared x 100 gold pieces.
So she can purchase a +6 concentration belt for 3600 gp; or a +7 for 4900 if somebody is willing to spot her the required 400 gold.

Now if she has the craft wondrous item feat, she can make something far greater for that gold amount. She is able to create a +9 concentration skill belt for 4050 gold and 324 exp. Once again, if somebody will be kind and loan her 500 gold she can create a +10 concentration skill belt for 5000 gold and 400 exp.

Not to nitpick, her 16 constitution score gives her a +3 modifier.

So her concentration skill now has 4 options
5 Ranks + 4 CC + 3 Con + 6 belt = +18 Concentration Skill Check
5 Ranks + 4 CC + 3 Con + 7 belt = +19 Concentration Skill Check
5 Ranks + 4 CC + 3 Con + 9 belt = +21 Concentration Skill Check
5 Ranks + 4 CC + 3 Con + 10 belt = +22 Concentration Skill Check

If this is a character at creation the best route is to take the item creation feat, make the +9 belt and buy a breastplate for AC (and medium armor) for donning/doffing. Let’s not forget the weapon of her choice (which she can cast magic weapon on if need be), leaving plenty of money for supplies.

I'll have to ask my DM how he plays Psionic. We dont have anyone in our group that does that.

She's going to be right up on the front lines... we are trying a combat experiment with our group the next time we play.

I didnt want to complicate my question but out DM allows +6 for Combat Casting (in house rule) with that xtra bit gives her +13 against a DC of 17 to cast 2nd level spells at the front lines... not too bad if she needs to pop the ORC Fighter next to her with healing without fearing an AoO.

Thanks for the correction on CON... I typoed... ment to say CON 14.

But it looks like I will have to have something created. She (Dreamsight Shifter - Eberron) does not have Item creation feat because her goal is to become a Combat Medic @ 6th level (She has DODGE, Combat Casting Feats).

CM 2 allows adding class level to Defensive Concentration checks. I'm assuming that means JUST the Combat Medic levels and NOT her Cleric Levels.

With the money she has and our in house rule of Combat Casting getting +6 vs +4... It looks like she will just need a simple + x Belt of Concentration. I will run it by the DM and see what he says.

10-29-05, 09:49 AM I don't know what combat Medic does, but if you just want to cast defensivly without provoking attacks, get skill focus, your improved combat casting and a belt of concentration. It should be easy to reach the point where you pass the check, even if you roll a 1.
