HI All,

When a Cleric uses the summon monster spell, are their limits placed on what they can summon?

For example, can a lawful good cleric summon a Neutral or evil monster?

Does the monster have to exactly match the alignment of the cleric or cleric's diety?

What of Neutral clerics/ dieties then? Can they select any monster on the list?

Check the SRD or PHB under clerics :

"A cleric can't cast spells of an alignment opposed to his own.."

Hence if you are good, no evil spells, if you are lawful no chaos spells and vice versa.

And the summon monster spell:

" when you use a summoning spell to summon an air, chaotic, earth, evil...creature, it is a spell of that type. "

So if you summon a fiendish dire rat, it's and evil, lawful spell.

No the monster summoned does not have to match your alignment exactly, as long as its not opposed. (IE if you are LG you can summon LG, LN, N, NG)

And i believe yes a true neutral (N) cleric can summon any creature since no alignment opposes his.

phoenix hit it right on the head. In addition, you should be mindful of the spell alignments of SM even if you are an arcane spellcaster. Some DMs (myself included) keep note of repeated casting of opposing aligned SM spells for purpose of measuring alignment shift.

:b: As a DM I allow the templates of Celestial and Fiendish to be inter changable. So if you want a celestial dire rat, go for it.

Also you could ask your DM to allow you to spell research to find new creatures to summon. I think there was a summoning list on the WOTC main site. try a search maybe you'll get lucky.
